This is me at the last rendezvous....I appear fat cause I am! Gained a lot over the last year....which is why I need your help. Pick the photo apart, find everything that's wrong and make suggestions as to how to improve my outfit....don't say lose weight cause I'm trying...that's a separate issue.

Of course you know me...I have to ask...have you chosen what you are trying to interpret yet?  I feel like we can't give suggestions unless we know what time period, what type of person etc you are trying to depict.  Then, we can help.

By the way...you don't look fat.  I think your pants must of shrunk cause your not.

Dryball

Heather.....either you are buttering up the old man, or your just plain sweet. But to the question....I 'm most interested in the time period of 1830 to 1850, broken down old reprobate cant give up the life of a mountain man sort of persona.

ok, first ned, if you havent done it read the book "crow killer" it will help on the outfit. this is my era also, and a mountain man/trapper of your age would surly gone native allready as was the tradition. take a scalp, and take the buckskins. so if i were you, because i dont think you want to wear leggins, check into getting some "buckskin trousers" and mocs. you would have worn a leather belt on the outside of your shirt (they didnt tuck them in) or a sash. a fur cap of some kind would be a good idea, after all, your a trapper you would wear leather and fur.

Dryball

Actually Jean, I've thought about going with breechclout and leggins. Got any recommendations on the mocs? I would rather make the hat, but I need a pattern. Are you volunteering your scalp? If you are, please take good care of it till I can get down there...you are a good buddy!

heres a place to start working on native attire. http://www.crazycrow.com/store/ they have low top moccasin kits that arent to expensive. you need to decide what region you would have been trapping in and then find out what native tribes were there. i can recommend a gal to make the leggins. shes making this outfit for me right now.

kit_carson

oh by the way the gal mouse on my forum you took a shine to, shes the one thats making the outfit for me

Dryball

Thanks Jean, you helped a lot...but...but...but..the scalp! Your not reneging on the scalp....are you? :(

ifin you kin take my scalp, you kin have it! but seriously read crow killer it will help! i promise!

Hey Ned!  Your gonna show off those sexy legs, huh?!  haha!  Seriously, after you figure out what region you are portraying that he has trapped at you will know better. If you do leather ruff it up so you don't look like you walked out of the store.  Mountain men were dirty.  Use the rough part of the leather as the outside of your garments.  I wouldn't put too much ornamentation or beadwork on your clothes, but that is my opinion.  I would get a rougher looking shooting bag...if you dont have an attachment to the one you have, you could just take that one and rough it up and smack it around with a hammer and remove the lace. The shirt you have works.  The belt or sash idea from before would be good.  If you don't want to have to go with a fur hat you could go with a felt hat.  Hope I wasn't too critical.

YOU ARE NOT FAT!!!!!

kit_carson

i agree with heather on alot of her points! mountain men lived in there clothes, they only got washed by wearing in the rain, or crossing rivers and streams. and like she says dont go with alot of bead work, it tears off. and is very very expensive. you do not want to hear how much that outfit thats being made for me is worth. it might give you a stroke!

Dryball

Heather, I have other bags...that one is very special to me....it stays just like it is. And I don't do beads! Although I do love a good choker, maybe an ear ring or two. How come no one likes my hat? Sheese!

kit_carson

ned, the cap is a greek fishing cap! lol,,,,,,,,,,,

Dryball

Yes I know. And it's been around for a very long time with no major changes. If you know of a good patten, I like the idea of a fur hat.
