Similar to Scrimshaw. This is actually done with a wood burner, Tomahawk and Medicine wheel on far side.

That is very nice - wonder if leg bones smell as bad as horn with they get hot?! :qz:

Blackfeet

As a matter of fact, they do, oh yes! Not only that, but they take a huge amount of heat.

beowulf

that I like ! thmbsup never thought of using a bone , but thats just a danged good idea !

Blackfeet

Beowulf,

The beauty of the leg bone is that it has a natural hole through both ends for cartilage/ligament. A great place to thread some sinew for attachment of choice. I am using the other end of this bone for a short starter, but will probably put a brass bolster on that one so it doesn't crack.  I'll send pic when finished

A pan charger is used to prim the pan on a flint lock to ignite the main charge

Great job,  (susp) what's the leg off???? Was it another bad dinner night at yer house hntr. Just kidding is that deer bone and if it is I hope you don't mind me stealin yer idea I like it so much I want one for me.  Great job very cool dntn

Blackfeet

That is a deer leg bone aged a couple of years.
A couple of things to note. The bone tends to split naturally as it dries along the length so when you clean out the marrow, use caution to step it out slowly. Same thing with your brass dispenser end, take a little at a time to fit, but too tight will result in splitting. The next one that I do will incorporate some form of end cap to strengthen that area. Good luck thmbsup

Hey blackfeet guess what, I found out today just how brittle those legs are.  ;D Try again when I find the rest of my bones.

Blackfeet

Yeah, I almost lost this one when I was fitting the end plug. On a similar note, I have heard a snap in my den/cave and went in to find that some of my bear teeth had shattered from drying out :'(

There is a gizmo stuff you cover them with so they won't do that. I remember my mom covering bear and wolf teeth years ago, she just gave my daughter a wolf tooth necklace that a native alaskan gave her when they lived there before I was born. They coated it with something. The wolf tooth necklace almost looks new and its almost 45 years old. I'll ask her and get back to you.
