That may be an indication that this one may not last either. I did finally get to try it yesterday. Fired about thirty balls and still had quite a bit of the 4f left  so it will certainly work for a squirrel hunting trek, at least around here. Just have to keep it dry. I know, 3f would have worked, but at the time that I bought it, I was going by 'expert' advice that I needed FFFFg.

I have been doing some research on the cracking issue, actually directed at finding a way to keep a bear skulls teeth from shattering, found this gem with the search being
Preserving Teeth:

Re: Preserving Teeth

A tip on preserving teeth is to avoid telling a samoan rugby league front rower he's a pansy
(that was found on a dentist's forum)(susp)

Only thing I have found so far is to soak them in mineral oil for as long as you can............................

Blackfeet I have a question for you. Which part of the leg are you using. Upper ,lower front or back. I have two lower front legs. Just curious.

There is a gizmo stuff you cover them with so they won't do that. I remember my mom covering bear and wolf teeth years ago..............They coated it with something. The wolf tooth necklace almost looks new and its almost 45 years old. I'll ask her and get back to you.

Brokenhawk, did you ever find out whet that stuff was?

Crazell, it is a shin bone, I believe from the front leg.

Thank you for letting know. The one i have aren't even 1 year removed from the deer. Should i let them age or would they better to try now?

I am hoping that Brokenhawk or I can find something to help preserve them. I have found a couple of references to soaking in mineral oil. This one has cracked more since I made it and I will be fitting it with brass cap. The other end of the shin, with the knuckle is actually a stronger looking bone but has less area for engraving. If you want, I will turn out a few caps and send you one. You will have to sand the bone round to fit and epoxy the cap in place. This will keep it together even if it cracks full length.

Wonder if lacquer would seal it but not change the color?

I don't know about that. What I can't figure is how long to soak in mineral oil and how long does it last after. The guy was selling bear teeth and assured the buyers that he had stored them in oil to prevent cracking. Question that I have is, what happens now that they are out? At any rate, an endcap will hold them together. I will tap the cap for the thread of the spring loaded charger head from TOW.
