hello all.

great site you haves here.

really enjoyed , ''whats your favorite rifle'' thread.

mines a .36 buggy , underhammer.

anyhoo. my pop gave me his old lyman great planes rifle, its a fifty caliber.

rifle is in pretty good shape, except the fact that its set in the safe for many years,  [pop shoots an old cva .50 the most, cause its lighter]

on the lyman theres a small screw, in the powder drum ? it is rusted in, i've soaked it in CLP.  for the last week, but still cannot gets it out,

the screw head is a little buggered up, would like to replace it,

but i dont want to strip it off either. what else can i do ?

also.. i'ed like to rebore to .54 caliber, and can you recommend a good set of triggers and lock ?

thanks

Wow, how old is that Lyman ?  In 30 years I don't recall one with a drum ignition! Usually they have the "snail" type.
I'm assuming you pulled the nipple and soaked the inside of the drum/screw with a good penetrating oil, as well as the outside.  I prefer PB Blaster.  Never used anything better.  After that maybe use some heat on it?  (Might wanna  make sure it's unloaded before turning a torch on it ;D )

thanks big jake, not sure what to call it,

looks like a round drum coming out of the barrel, with a flat spot, where the nipple screws in.

i have some pbi blaster, i'll spray it down.

thanks

ok !!!  PBI  worked !!!  just like you said,  now ? what exactly ? does that little set screw do ? a set screw for the nipple ?

yes, its an old lyman great plains rifle,  the bore looks perfect, the triggers where a little stiff, took them apart, cleaned em up good with AR15/M1Garand CLP.

and old tooth brush. they working pretty good.

pop gave it to me, it's about ? 30 years old ? dunno for sure. last time it was shot ? was 20 ??? years ago.

pop said once a year, he'ed clean her up, and putt it back,  said i can do what i please,

soooo... we'er kicking around the ideal of reboring to a .54 and better triggers ? the wood looks very good,

dunno ? why pop shoots the old CVA so much, he says he just ''likes it''  its pretty light rifle, shoots real good, but i dont like the loose and floopy trigger on it.

pop's shot a truckload of deer with that old CVA.

anyhoo...  the lyman sure seems to be a nice rifle,

Nothin wrong with a 50 cal... but instead or reboring her I'd suggest looking for a new barrel to just drop in her if you want to go to a 54

I would either stick with the 50 or get another barrel for it that is 54. If the barrel is good why spend $ to get it rebored when ya can get another barrel for probably less cash and that way ya can switch from 50 to 54 when ya want. I prefer the 50 myself. As for penetrating oils, the best I have found is KROIL. This one seems to work when nothing else will and in doing auto mechanics, handyman work and working on my guns it has in my opinion surpassed Blaster as the better product. This stuff is aggressive when it comes to rusted/frozen items. My brother and I put it in an old car engine which had been locked up for 20+ years that we know of and after a couple days it was free and ended up running great without having to be torn down and rebuilt. kroil is also the only one I have found that will remove steel bolts that are frozen into aluminum.

That isn't actually a set screw, it's cleanout screw.  It can be removed to run say a pipe cleaner through to clean out fouling from the flash channel.

Penetrating oils are one of those things everyone has their favorites of, and with the exception of a few, I won't argue that point. Kroil is good stuff as well.  When it comes to firearms, I'd rather use Ballistol than anything else, except for rusted bolts.  'Course thats if you can stand the smell of it, which is even worse than PB Blaster.
Glad ya got the screw out!

only problem i have is ''finding'' a drop in barrel for my lyman, i can find the drop in barrels for the t/c renagade, but ???

looking all over the web, nothing for lyman ?

still thinking . a .54 or better yet a .58 would be wonderfull in my old gun.

ok, so now i know its a clean out screw, got it out and working fine.

thanks guys.

My brother got a new barrel directly from Lyman a few years back.  Think it was actually more money than a GM drop in though.
