I ASKED A GOOD QUESTION...I ASKED A GOOD QUESTION....

mongrel

Working from a blank, or a precarved stock with no inlet, one would install the drum first, then position the lockplate in relation to it. A precarve with the lock inlet already cut doesn't allow this -- but for most it's far easier to position the drum accurately with the lockplate already in place, than it is to inlet a lock.

Inletting/installing the breechplug, lock, trigger, and buttplate are going to be probably the next four mind-numbingly long posts I'm going to write (actually the breechplug instructions are fairly short and sweet). Right now I'm having an intimate relationship with a couple of chainsaws and a grove of overgrown and half-dead cedar trees, and both the physical work of picking up tools and taking pictures, and having to think to the extent necessary to write these posts, is more than I have the strength for right now.

BTW, Jerry, nice work on the inlet of that lollipop tang. I've only done one of those and they're the sort of female dog that even this half-crazed mongrel doesn't want to mess with again.

Of course a sufficient amount of $$$ has a way of overcoming attitudes like that.

Jerry, the jig from TOTW will make your nipple locating (boys, do not EVEN go there -- it's called what it's called! Go discuss the cosmos -- you know, planets like URANUS -- oh, never mind.... Nipplenipplenipplenipple....) easier -- even having installed them dozens of times I still now and then get one a little off.

Mongrel, I'm taking your "mind-numbingly long posts" and putting them into Word format so that I can save the whole thing.....might be a book in it for ya,lol.....also, if anyone wants it I can send it. Makes it easier to print and carry than getting sawdust in the computer..

AS the mongrel says , it will make an easier job of it . I have quite a few that are already d&t for nipple and cheat using the lathe to time them .
For locating your center you can also take the cleanout screw out and place that end against barrel and put a tight fitting drill bit through shank end to scribe the mark instead of wasting a drum for a jig.

It really sucks wanting to do this and not being able to. But, I'm saving up.

I have made a few of my tools made a barrel channel scraper from a file for this rifle

FrankG

RB , thats what cool bout this hobby most you can make for building the guns . It doesnt take a wheel barrow full of tools although you eventually end up with that many lol !

Chaffa Hosa

Frank
where can I get a barrel channel rasp?

FrankG

#42
Brownells , kinda spendy. I use big files bent around 45% with half oct. ground on them with a back grind on the edge facing away from you. Easy to make with a torch or barbeque :)
After bent , heat brite red and quench in oil, temper to lite straw and quench in oil again ,stone the edge and get after it  :)

I better add these are for pulling not pushing :)
