You could take a little wt off by turning all but 10-11 inches round at about 3/4" . I did that for my wifes 50 cal. 1/2 stock.
Thats a good idea
But I got no lathe

Do Vincents have a hooked breech?

Chaffa, if I didn't screw it up, you got a message.

Unlike most rifles of their period (1840-50, with a few examples dated earlier), Vincents generally had fixed breechplugs and a drum-and-nipple setup, rather than a hooked breech with a "snail" bolster for the nipple (roughly similar to the T/C or Lyman GPR breechplugs). Understand that "generally" is a wise word to use when talking about any of these handmade rifles, whether they were made in 1750 or 1850; the fool who becomes so knowledgeable on this subject that he ever says "always" or "never" is setting himself up for having to eat a plateful of rancid crow.

I've built a number of rifles for kids and prefer to go with just a wee bit more barrel than they can easily heft, right off the bat. Why? For one, like any newbie to this sport, they lack the strength in the areas of the arm that make a steady hold possible -- but they'll build that strength in a hurry. In the meantime you can use a variety of rests, which ain't a bad idea anyway, since it makes it heaps more likely they'll score solid hits in the black, feel successful, and thus enjoy the whole shootin' match that much more. Another thing is, and this is important when you contemplate actually building a rifle or having one built -- if you build for the munchkin the child is now, in as little as a relatively few months and certainly in no more than a few years she will have outgrown your gift to her. Not such a bad thing -- it's never bad to have an excuse to build another gun -- but you can put off the inevitable and allow her to shoot her "very most favorite" rifle ('cause papaw built it just for her....) that much longer, if you allow for some growth on her part in the initial design.

Just my $.02, which is only as valuable as it is useful to you.

I'm gonna ask a question that will prove my ignorance of gunbuilding.

Where is the drum and nipple?  I'm guessing that you haven't installed them yet, but how is that accomplished accurately?

FrankG

Top of lock plate is centered in the flat an 1/8" in front of plug. I use an old drum with threads cut off and the cleanout screw remove and a bit run through while held in cut out of plate to scribe a mark.

Thanks for the info Frank . Was wondering how I was gonna do it
Don't have and old drum but I'll buy an extra or two
Do I need to get the tool from TOTW to locate the nipple??
