what stain did you use?

The light is almost gone and the flash doesn't show the wood very well
Still have to dovetail for rear sight and drill and tap for drum or ventliner
I'm thinking seriously about putting a flintlock on now

And just for you Tom

I went through the same procedure as BraveHeart
Some of Tony's red iron stain then black walnut hull dye with a couple drops black leather dye added

A couple of fine pieces of iron, Braveheart and Longshanks.

Sounds like you have the same taste in movies as I do, BTW.

If you're toying with the idea, now, of putting a flintlock on Longshanks -- just do it. It will nag you and ruin your sleep and in general play hob with your sanity until you give in....

I know. Believe me, I know. You have only to look at me to see where it ends....

Ironwood

A rifle that looks as good as that one, is just crying out to be a flinter.  Beautiful job Jerry.

Is that a Siler lock? Too lazy to scroll back through earlier posts to see where or if you said.

If it is (or if it's the L&R Classic, a Siler almost-twin), you can easily install a percussion drum with 5/16"x24 threads, to allow the caplock to be used -- you already have the lock, why not?

Then simply unscrew the drum and fit a vent liner. Get or make one with enough of a screwdriver slot to permit it to be removed (ideally, index it with the slot horizontal, so no priming can get into the slot below the back of the pan). Then buy the flint version of either the Siler or L&R lock, whichever you have. They're made to interchange -- for the reason I just described. Some guys really like and actually make use of the dual-lock setup.

I originally had in mind a percussion/flint setup
The lock is the L&R Durs Egg so a replacement flint is readily available

The names do come from the movie but Tom H named BraveHeart to honor my grand daughter LuLu's struggles with a heart condition. I will soon start her little Vincent style and it will bear the name Lady Murron.

Jerry that gun a beautiful. Kits are a good start, but I know from experience that it don't take much to screw it up. You did a wonderful job on this project! I am very impressed.

PS. Put the rock lock in it! lol

fd-ems-emt

JB, you did it again..

That's a beauty,,

Lets use know how it shoots..
It's not what tool you use to hunt with.
It's that you use the tool Legally and Ethically

Well I went ahead and drilled, tapped and installed the drum and nipple, so LongShanks is a caplock for now. I finally settled on the rear sight location so now I'll cut the dovetail

Jerry that is a beautiful rifle.
Excellent craftsmanship.
