I like what I'm seeing there!  dntn

I decided to add a patch box that was on the clearance at muzzleloader builders supply. All it said in the add was it is a "Virginia or trade style". Since I don't know what "style" this half stock is, I figured it would work well bunkr!  I might need to learn how to do some simple engraving to dress it up a bit wtt.

Some engraving would make a huge difference, IMHO; as would a bit of carving.  I don't have these skills but you do have the skills.  You're kinda getting me excited about this project!  Keep posting away on each step!  dntn

I couldn't find my answer in Hanshi or hotfxr's post  hdslp so I'll ask here...should this nose cap have an entry pipe behind it?
Thinking of changing out the thimbles to these old CVA steel ones and adding a steel entry. Opinions  [hmm]

:-&   Those look nice without nose cap .  With one they just aren't needed and look weird.

Hanshi

My halfstock .45 doesn't have a nose cap.  When I got it from mongrel it was like this and still is.

Hmm...all three of the half stocks I purchased from him had a little circle of wood glued to the nose and had nose caps already attached. I left the mountain rifle cap on the first one (walnut), and poured a pewter cap on the second build cherry stock. I already have a cap on this one too which was needed in order to use the factory under rib from the CVA Hawken barrel. I was just wanting input on the use of an entry thimble with this particular nose cap wtt

Well, it may not look like a lot of progress but I did get a little more done this past weekend. Let in the patch box side plates and chiseled out most of the storage area. Still need to install the spring and learn more about ingraving. pnic.
I cleaned up the beaver tail on the lock panel side and inlet the wedge plates. It's progress...

I wish I could engrave well enough to not ruin my patchboxes; but alas.  I don't particularly like fancy rifles; I much prefer the minimal basic carving and engraving....understated, in other words.  The only carving on any of my rifles is lollypops at the back of the lock panels and some nice grooves carved into the cheekpiece.  And that's on my .50 nice  e. Lancaster X York X late Lancaster "style" (mish mash) rifle.  It is a beauty, though, thanks to the beautiful stock wood.  It's the 4th one up starting with the matching pistol.

not a bad looking rifle in the bunch ,  thmbsup

I am hoping to do some very basic engraving. Here is the pattern I want to do. It is some very simple lines anybody can do  (susp....at least that is was my thinking pnic. I bought some brass plates at the Hobby store to practice with a square graver from Muzzleloader supply store. I don't get more than about a 1/4 inch line before the graver digs in to a stop and I can't lower the tool enough to plow out of the line. Maybe the practice brass isn't as soft as the actual patch box, don't know. I'm in need of some instruction in order to accomplish my goals for this build. wtt

I can't help with the engraving technique, but I like the design   dntn

Little more progress last weekend:

Hanshi

Good decisions on that rifle and excellent execution!  Your patchbox design is spot on.  I've tried to come up with some simple doable way to to accomplish "engraving" but strike out every time.  I even considered the ideas of: 1.  scratching it on with something.   2.  acid etching.  But both still require a measure of skill which I am 100% bereft of.

Back to working on this project...draw filed the barrel, polished up the furniture and the late ketland lock, then applied a couple of rounds of Birchwood Casey cold blue.
