This is me at the last rendezvous....I appear fat cause I am! Gained a lot over the last year....which is why I need your help. Pick the photo apart, find everything that's wrong and make suggestions as to how to improve my outfit....don't say lose weight cause I'm trying...that's a separate issue.
Ned

Of course you know me...I have to ask...have you chosen what you are trying to interpret yet? I feel like we can't give suggestions unless we know what time period, what type of person etc you are trying to depict. Then, we can help.
By the way...you don't look fat. I think your pants must of shrunk cause your not.
Heather.....either you are buttering up the old man, or your just plain sweet. But to the question....I 'm most interested in the time period of 1830 to 1850, broken down old reprobate cant give up the life of a mountain man sort of persona.
Ned
Ned Not useing my cimputer so the pic is not big enough for an old blind man. but would say the belt need to be replaced looks canvas and i don't this they would have been seen in you time frame

ok, first ned, if you havent done it read the book "crow killer" it will help on the outfit. this is my era also, and a mountain man/trapper of your age would surly gone native allready as was the tradition. take a scalp, and take the buckskins. so if i were you, because i dont think you want to wear leggins, check into getting some "buckskin trousers" and mocs. you would have worn a leather belt on the outside of your shirt (they didnt tuck them in) or a sash. a fur cap of some kind would be a good idea, after all, your a trapper you would wear leather and fur.
Actually Jean, I've thought about going with breechclout and leggins. Got any recommendations on the mocs? I would rather make the hat, but I need a pattern. Are you volunteering your scalp? If you are, please take good care of it till I can get down there...you are a good buddy!
Ned
heres a place to start working on native attire. http://www.crazycrow.com/store/ they have low top moccasin kits that arent to expensive. you need to decide what region you would have been trapping in and then find out what native tribes were there. i can recommend a gal to make the leggins. shes making this outfit for me right now.
oh by the way the gal mouse on my forum you took a shine to, shes the one thats making the outfit for me
Thanks Jean, you helped a lot...but...but...but..the scalp! Your not reneging on the scalp....are you? :(
Ned
ifin you kin take my scalp, you kin have it! but seriously read crow killer it will help! i promise!
Hey Ned! Your gonna show off those sexy legs, huh?! haha! Seriously, after you figure out what region you are portraying that he has trapped at you will know better. If you do leather ruff it up so you don't look like you walked out of the store. Mountain men were dirty. Use the rough part of the leather as the outside of your garments. I wouldn't put too much ornamentation or beadwork on your clothes, but that is my opinion. I would get a rougher looking shooting bag...if you dont have an attachment to the one you have, you could just take that one and rough it up and smack it around with a hammer and remove the lace. The shirt you have works. The belt or sash idea from before would be good. If you don't want to have to go with a fur hat you could go with a felt hat. Hope I wasn't too critical.
YOU ARE NOT FAT!!!!!
i agree with heather on alot of her points! mountain men lived in there clothes, they only got washed by wearing in the rain, or crossing rivers and streams. and like she says dont go with alot of bead work, it tears off. and is very very expensive. you do not want to hear how much that outfit thats being made for me is worth. it might give you a stroke!
Heather, I have other bags...that one is very special to me....it stays just like it is. And I don't do beads! Although I do love a good choker, maybe an ear ring or two. How come no one likes my hat? Sheese!
ned, the cap is a greek fishing cap! lol,,,,,,,,,,,
Yes I know. And it's been around for a very long time with no major changes. If you know of a good patten, I like the idea of a fur hat.

check the crazy crow link! the have fur hat patterns. and much much more! this is the first place i check for alot of things! both native and fur trade/mountain man era
Crazy Crow does have fur hats. :) Not that I don't like yours it just doesn't fit the character you want to portray.
Thank you Heather....which kinds of fur hats fit in? The coonskin or skunkskin of Hollywood...or something else?
get a pattern get a couple of furs and make one! heres a place to buy furs. http://www.chichesterinc.com/index.htm
they sell hats also
Jean, I have furs, but which pattern is the question.
This better for a shooting bag?
Personally, I prefer a felt hat. But, yes, the hollywood kind are what people use.
There isn't a picture? I will check again when I get back from working outside. I had a friend who took a beautiful leather bad and used a hammer on it to make holes and scuff it up. Seems sacrilegious, but it looked more like what they would have had.
Which horn and which knife?
(http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1474/dscn0131z.jpg) (http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/2726/dscn0132.jpg)
middle horn and carry both knives
Ned, here's a painting by Alfred Jacobs Miller. He lived and painted during the time period of the Mountain Man and Trappers. His paintings and sketches are not all that detailed but you can get the feel of the person he's painting.
http://the-athenaeum.org/art/full.php?ID=16151
Can just see me wearing that in sunny California. ROFL I'd either be laughed out of the rendezvous or rushed to the nearest emergency room with heat prostration! noway
Ned
You would definately have a heat stroke. You definately don't want to wear that leather coat. :) I think that is closer for the bag, but you probably want something without the scallopy looking stuff. Straight lines...Do you want to beat that bag up? Think dirty, scruffy out in the woods for months on end kinda guy. :) You are getting there. Like the knives by the way. thmbsup
Ned
If you go with the fur hat, go with just the hat not a full drape Two reasons.
1 A full drape wae used more for cerimonies and is a royal pain to try and get
thought and kind of brush.
2 The sull drape is good only at 0 or below
Think I may prefer the slouch hat....makes more sense to me.
Ned,
I know diddle about rondy's and gear but I think you'd look cool with your head shaved like the guy in Jeremiah Johnson? The one who rode around yelling all the time so the Indians would think he was crazy and leave him alone. You wouldn't have to yell though --
As to losing weight, I just lost almost 20 with some dietary changes you would not like - not at all. :-&
Tom...what do you mean by this? "You wouldn't have to yell though"
Ned
O.K. biggest and cheapest change!!
Lose the wrist watch!!!
Learn to tell time by the hand and horizon method or get a pocket watch.
i have a nice daily hand wind Skeleton watch, (pocket watch with glass face & back to see the inner workings.
I also have a extremely old railroad watch that still works. i had it repaired 10 years ago when i lived in Colorado Springs, and the watch maker said if it ever breaks again i am screwed because the last parts available for that model west of the mississippi river are inside it. So it sits in a case...
Speaking of which... wanna trade ? watch for 1860 army?
the metal framed glasses will still work, but wrist watches oh no.
oh, and what ever bag or accutriments you find you don't need, please think of me, all donations accepted...
just thought i would pull your chain.
Ian

he was depicting a real person named "del gue" and ned this jeremiah johnson is based on the true story of john johnston also known as liver eatin johnson, aka the crow killer. like i have been saying, go to your public library and get "crow killer" by thorpe. it will help you alot with what you want to do
Jean...read again....I have been mortally insulted by inferring that I don't have to yell to be considered crazy. I'm not sure yet, but I think a duel may be imminent.
Ned
call him out! shoot him up! read crow killer while you do it! keep the the spirit of "del gue" on your shoulder when you do it! del was a crack shot!

this is good advice! loose the watch, however, before 1850 no mountain man could have afforded a "pocket watch" i have an 1853 Illinois "railroad watch" and you know there wernt any railroads before that. also the few pocket watches that were made before 1850 would have been sooooo expensive that only the very, very, very rich could afford something like that. i mean seriously, do you see a mountain man in 1830 ponying up $150 dollars for an unreliable novelty? seriously, that equals what 4 maybe 5 top of the line hawkens rifles. so loose the watch, dont get another. you dont need one. time doesnt exist in the mountains.
You are both right, I forgot to remove it. rdfce Next time I'll hide it in my breechclout....is that acceptable?
Ned
YIKES! to much information there ned ole boy! besides if you pinch something with that wrist band,,,,,,,,,,,,

No offense intended--although I can see how it would seem that way. People generally leave old bald guys alone and having very little hair left (haven't gone to a barber since haircuts were $6.50) and being an old guy, I know this to be true. Course I also yell at lot as my kids and grandson can tell you.
As to duels, I shoot flint smoothbore with shot -- especially at skeet. Shot 21 out of 25 today in the wind. Given a choice of weapons, I'd call for flint smoothbores with shot at skeet using station #7 low house. hntr
Ned I think you'll impress us all if you can hide that in your clout with NO POCKETS!
Bruce
Tom..I'd love to shoot skeet with you...just wish I had a good smoothbore...maybe someday.
Ned
Bruce...who said no pockets? All clouts need pockets!
Ned
Any improvement?

Hey Ned! Looking good! You are getting there. Will look better when you add the hawk and knife.
For the legggins, do you think Botas would work, or must I go with full length leggins?
lookin real good ned! much, much better!

you could easily pull off botas or a half legging. the full length were not really worn over pants
Lookin' good.. Almost an original.
Jeepers.... You mean Ned isn't one of the original mountain men! After all, he is a much experienced (ol') geezer. ;D
Phhhhhhhhhbb bs blah
Ned!
I seem to remember an old hat you made back in the late 70's, sort of a civilian version of a Dragoon type hat. Didn't look bad and you made it your self. Saw one at the begining of the movie Jerimiah Johnson, also the series Into The West. Saw pictures of them in old uniform prints. And what about them Purple sweatpants?
You mean this one?
That's the one, man you looked younger then, guess I did too.
Ned: It's easy to loose weight and feel like a million dollars doing it. Stop eating meat, dairy & oil/fats. It's that simple. Go to John McDougall's website and learn how. He and Dean Ornish, both M.D.'s, have proven this over and over. This is how people ate in the old days before they could afford meat every day and when meat was a rare commodity.
Problem is I don't eat meat, dairy, or fats....I'm a vegetarian except for occasional fish.
Ned
I went to the diet dr. and I have a diet that requires me to drink a gallon of water a day. Yes, I feel water logged. But, it does work. I also got meds from him, but lost 15 lbs in two weeks. Also, eliminate sugar, but I still say you aren't fat.
Heather, if I weren't happily married....and near twice your age...........................................
Awe Shucks... rdfce
All of this diet stuff will never work over the long haul unless you exercise. The reason there wasn't many overweight people back 60-70 years ago.... they worked! Everyone worked... Women, Men, and Kids. We had meat but it was mostly ham. About the only beef was canned or when the peddler came around. Just my 2ยข worth. ;D
True. They did work. And they ate good too. Used real butter etc. Something I found out at the diet dr...3500 calories is one pound you can run for 30 minutes and only burn 300 calories so you definately have to reduce calories too.
Gene, I walk around 20 miles a week in the winter...40 or more in the summer, plus a lot of bike riding. So what am I doing wrong?
You are absolutely right Heather. Calories must be reduced. If you walk, say for an hour a day, steady walking, not shopping in the mall. :) You'll be surprise how well your diet works. Also you'll be surprised when you get addicted to walking. :)
Ned I'm surprised you are not lean with that much good walking. I see you are addicted to walking. :) Ain't it fun! Ned you might have your doc take a close look at your medications. Some meds will cause you to gain weight.
That's what I'm worried about....my meds. cant be changed.
Ned, they are coming up with new meds everyday. There may be a substitute for a med that's causing your weight gain, if that's the problem.
you might want to contact a dr. and find out. we are starting to get into an area where one of us could suggest something that could be a health hazzard. on the surface it sounds like your doing everything right. if you have concerns, seek out a professional
D****! Jean, you said something intelligent! I'm impressed! ROFL Just kidding, as you know...but you are definitely correct, that's where doctors are actually useful.
Always lost weight while hiking..6-15 miles a day and carring my camp on my back.. P.S. I'm now carring an extra 15-20lbs at all times and not hiking with a pack. Guess I need to take my own advice.
Yup. But it do work.
well if you come up and we do that trek, i know what gun im brining! that ithaca! wow!
I think I'll bring my .32....I'm an old coot you know.

LMAO!!!!!!!!
i could a swore it said "I think i'll bring my .32,,,,,,,,I'm an old coot you know"
Why Jean! You know me better then that! My next gun is gonna be a swivel breech with a stock so's I can shoot it offhand.

do you know what a swivel breach costs? you wont be able to post pics here its against the rules! lol,,,,,,,,, actually that my next build and i'm keeping that one for me.

are you even allowed to talk about one of those here?
Sure...why not?
thats the exact opposite of a cheap gun, you know a parts set starts at $2,600, and goes to about $4,000 then you gotta find someone to put it together.
Jean...your missing the point of this forum. We don't care what your gun costs, $100 0r $10000...as long as you don't claim that your gun is better then another's. Handmade or storebought, all are treated equally here...it's all about shooting within your means. I know you feel this inside of you...you are not a gun snob, you may wish that all could afford $1000+ rifles, but if we can't, so what. Right?
Ned
no i'm not a gun snob, lol,,,,,,,my favorite rifle is still my GPR! and i do wish we could all afford those high dollar guns, but thats why i started building, because i cant afford them, so i build them so can have a few.
