This is a 56 caliber smoothbore, which is about a 26-28 in gauge measurement I believe.  Would this be good enough for bird hunting?  I notice the sights are traditional rifle sights, and not the typical shotgun bead.  The price is $300.  Good price?

I say its a good price for a TC It will also shoot a patched roundball 50 -75 yards. Thompson Center guns carry a lifetime warranty

I figured this gun would meet my needs.  I am looking for something for bird hunting and for deer hunting.  I currently have a plastic stock 50 cal CVA Bobcat that I plan to make a wood stock for once I find some room to make it.  I want a traditional looking muzzleloader.  50-75 yards is about all I will allow myself anyways for hunting open sight.  Is 28 gauge good enough for dove?

28 guage will kill dove and lots of small game
It will also test your shooting skills
I hope you get the smoothie  ;D

Ok, I believe I will be bidding on this.  If I change my mind and decide not to, I will let you all know in case anyone wants to jump on it.  Auction ends in 1 day 7 hours as of Aug. 30, 9:43a.m. eastern time.

The gun also comes with one large and one small flask, plus some patches.

Have seen several 56cal smooth bore T/C Renegade barrels for sale on Auction Arms.  I have gone the other way, just bought a 50cal barrel for my 12ga  New Englander!!

Roundball,  how did you like your TC 56 cal smoothbore?

roundball

It was a good quality arm, like all of TC's MLs...but for me personally I found it physically too small...I suspect most large individuals would find it that way...I'm tall (6'4") and the LOP was just too short...my face would come down on the meaty back side of my right thumb...I always shot it with one of those slip on Pachmayr recoil pads to give it another inch LOP.

I was just developing an interest in Flintlocks about the time I got loads developed for the .56cal caplock and all caplocks startred gathering dust at that point, eventually began selling them off...I use GM Flint smoothbore barrels today in .54cal(.28ga) and .62cal(.20ga).

Smoothbores are very versatile and a lot of fun...
