just picked up a nice little 45 cal flint lock pistol the barrel is 7/8" OD would like to bore it out to make a smooth bore out it I would like it to be 62 but could go smaller also would like to file the barrel so it looked like it half round would a bore of 62 be to much or should i go smallerthanks for any help

NAULTRICK1

Is your barrel octagonal? If it is-7/8ths across the flats=.875 minus .62 bore=.255divided by 2= .1275 wall thickness approx 1/8th any variations will weaken that even further. I won't say go ahead and I won't say don't, but I would want for my self at least, at the chamber, and for a section further beyond that,  would want a more substantial wall thickness. First, Last and Always Be Safe! Hope this helps.

i think id give green mountian a call, or check out the barrels on e-gunparts.com (numrich) other than to say that i agree with NAULTRICK1

made a smoothbore out of an old cva .45 cal once , but it was still just over .45 when I was done .  and I left the barrel octagonal ! no sense in taking chances , like to keep my fingers where they are !

thanks for the info did not realize that the barrel would be that thin might just leave it a lone

I'd say look into a new barrel for it Sean, then you have some room to play

looked at green mt barrels the bigest bore is 50 cal  in 7/8"  don't want to use a biggest OD barrel I am not that good with wood and would hate to have inlet the barrel so might get a reamer and Boer it to a 50 the only thing is u wont be able to get it all with out removing the plug and my luck ill get the threads

You might look a http://www.middlesexvillagetrading.com/
that way you can get the cal you want, and a longer barrel that will fit
the look you want

[hmm] It can be done Ma'Man, just follow the old adage- Measure twice, cut Once- if you mark your reamer shaft to insure you don't go to deep- take your time, don't rush and don't do anything if you're unsure of what you're doing. And if in doubt Ask! The talent and skills I've come to appreciate on this site are invaluable! Good Luck thmbsup Oh and proof your barrel after, just to make sure.

I wouldnt go larger than .50 and at that you will likely have to ream and recut breech threads to 5/8-18 for larger plug at minimum.
