Im gona be starting a rifle build SOON!!!!
Im getting my parts list figured out,  IM STUCK on what barrel I should go with.

What makes a good barrel....company....style rifleing....Im happy with the 16ga. barrel from colerain, and plane on getn this barrel from them also....BUT
not sure what makes a barrel ACYOURAT ???

gona build a early virginia rifle.  will be shooting PRB ONLY.....I know I need slow tern...gona be 50cal.  44 or 42 in. swamped...ect.ect.ect

actually length has little to do with accuracy, I think caliber and powder charge is more important. I'm working on a .40 with a green mountain 36" straight barrel 7/8" across the flats and it holds dead on and a perfect weight for offhand. My reg'lar rifle is a .50 with a C weight colerain 42" swamped which isn't bad but the .40 just stays dead on where you point it. Only problem I have with a .40 is some states don't allow deer hunting with one, but for target work they're hard to beat.

I have used mostly Green Mountain barrels and really like their accuracy on both their 36" and 42".  I have a rifle with a Getz barrel that shoots much better than I do.  I have friends who have Colerain barrels in their rifles and really like them.  As far as cleaning goes, people that have them like the round bottom rifling for cleaning up a little faster.

All the length of the barrel gets you for accuracy is longer sighting plane.  Accuracy is much more concerned with the proper powder/patch/ball combination than anything else.  Each barrel is it's own law on that so you will have work everything up for the rifle.  A tedious process but well worth it.

Does it pay to spend the 60$ more for a rice barrel over a colerain?

Stumblin Wolf

In my opinion, no. I've outshot getz, rice and Rayl's! Only ones scare me is traditions! ROFL Them thangs are acc-u rite!

Thats not funny

my frst ML was a Traditions Fox River 50  ;D  I bought new when I was 13.  I wish I would have tried shooting past 100yrds   cuz that thing was a tack driver up 100. blah blah blah

can anybody school me on the diffrent kinds of rifling...benefits...what was "origional"...round bottom...bla. bla

the only thing that i can remember on rifling is that (i think) button rifling usually adds less stress to the barrel. been awhile snice i had a reason to look at the information closely... one of my gunsmith mentors built black powder rifles. he always used green mountain, and i have seen a target of a .36 cal that he built that shot a .007" 3 shot group at 100 yards. he swears by green mountain barrels... i cant say with any athority which is the best, cuz we not talking smokeless...

hi:I haven't  taught myself how to make my own barrels yet, so when I built my 58 I ordered from Rice, and yes it was a little more expensive, round bottom rifling, swamped- I have to say so far it's the most accurate rifle I own-now whether this is due to the time I took carving and channeling and the barrel-well?? But I have no complaints whatsoever with a Rice barrel. Just something to think about. [hmm]
