My Father in law sent this to me.
I Wonder if this really happened? I didn't know mules were that smart.

   This  is unbelievable!

A  couple from Montana  were out riding on the range, he with his rifle  and she (fortunately) with her  camera.
Their  dogs always followed them, but on this occasion  a Mountain Lion decided that he wanted to stalk  the dogs (you'll see the dogs in the background  watching).
Very,  very bad  decision.
The  hunter got off the mule with his rifle and  decided to shoot in the air to scare away the  lion, but before he could get off a shot the  lion charged in and decided he wanted a piece of  those dogs.
With  that, the mule took off and decided he wanted  a piece of that  lion.
That's  when all hell broke loose for the  lion.
As  the lion approached the dogs, the mule snatched  him up by the tail and started whirling him  around.  Banging its head on the ground on  every pass.  Then he dropped it, stomped on  it and held it to the ground by the throat.   The mule then got down on his knees and  bit the thing all over a couple of dozen times  to make sure it was dead, then whipped it into  the air again, walked back over to the couple  (who were stunned in silence) and stood there  ready to continue his ride as if nothing had  just  happened.
Fortunately,  even though the hunter didn't get off a shot,  his wife got the  pictures.

I've seen a mule kill a dog like this. Around here they put them in pastures with the cows to protect them from coyote's.

You know....that MIGHT BE, just about the coolest thing I have ever read...or seen for that matter....wow...  (susp) An attack mule. I might not sleep tonight....because I'm gonna be revising the animal kingdom in my head. Of course war horses in the middle ages were trained to fight too I guess, but man....a mule? Now I want one.....

Mules are a whole lot smarter than people believe, we had a couple on the ranch, and both were pretty smart, they love playing dumb to though. Anyone who thinks a Mule is dumb, is a fool.

Most savvy western packers prefer mules over horses for their pack strings. They are more sure-footed in the mountains and don't spook at everything like a horse.

I saw those photos about 2 years ago but the story was somewhat different. That story was a guy hunting lions with his dogs.

Grand dad used to run a hillside harvester in California pulled by 22head of horses and 2 mules. Mules would take verbal camands for turning and such and led the horses which did most of the pulling.  My unkle has a picture of his dad and the team at work up on his wall.

PS --that was when Kalifornia was run by a rural population and farming was king.
