Was looking for something totally unrelated and bumped into this...who'd a thunk.
I've had to use paper masks on cabinet projects but didn't have a clue about long term irritants and such.

Thank you Spitunia for this Information, had some severe reactions in the past from wood dust and almost got put in the hospital on a couple of occations.  Started working with some of the more exotic woods lately...mostly from Africa and south America...about a dozen of these woods are on this list.  I try to use a mask but....have a tendency to get busy and forget to put it on at times.  This list will help me be more careful with the ones that tend to be more toxic....thanks again.

I work a fair bit with maple ,didnt know it could cause problems . purple heart I knew about ,had a bad reaction to it back in 95 or 96 . not only does it mess up your lungs and sinuses ,it gives you a rash similar to poison ivy !

Started a cabinet for the pantry on Friday. Finished last night. Got my left eye all red and irritated from wood dust. Duh. skrt

Got irritated, black lunged and plugged up working the mill with clear heart red wood..learned to wear a mask when working with it..

Learned about the danger of paduk in high school.  I also found that the dust from cypress was irritating as well.

  Hi fellas.
I'm new here, but wanted to chime in on this one.
I used to do quite a bit of knife work, and didn't know that I was VERY allergic to Rosewood.
Came on kind of like poison ivy, but spread everywhere (ever have poison ivy in your nose?).
  I was very nearly hospitalized.
Now, I'm hyper-sensitive to the stuff.  And, poison ivy, oak, etc... is ten times as bad as it was.

Be careful, and be aware of what you're working with.  I always used eye protection, but now it's a mask as well.
And I never go near Rosewood.

   Cheers,
   Richard Larimer
