Hello all! I'm new to this site and new to ML firearms as well. I am looking for a descent percussion long rifle in .45-.50 cal. with a full stock and I've read a lot of reviews of the production guns that I don't like.

I really want a full stock long rifle, but I want it to last me, not brake or have the stock crack in a short time. I really would like some input on one to get. I'm a traditional archer and will be selling one of my bows to get the money to buy a long rifle. I'm wanting one in the $500-$600 range.

Can you please help me find one that won't be a problem?

Thanks very much in advance!

check out the lyman great plains, you can get it in kit or finished form. they are a long hefty rifle that balance real nice. several fellars here have them and love them. i have one in 54 that is sweet.

I like the Lyman Great plains rifles in fact I have two of them.
You said that you would like a full stock. Here is a site that sells full stock semi custom rifles and smooth bores. They are some what more in cost than you said you wanted to spend at this time, but in my opinion well worth the difference.
Here is the site address

Thanks all!

Wow, I can't believe the prices of some of these. I have to say that the TVM rifles are REALLY nice looking and are exactly what I want, however, I'll have to save for another year besides selling my bow to get one with all the accessories I'll need. I may have to get one of the $150 inline ones if I want to hunt ML season this year. I won't spend a lot on a gun I don't plan to keep for ever. I'm a hunter and for me it's all about the meat. We just bought a new freezer and it's up to me to fill it. My weapons though are my pride and joy, and I consider them an investment for my wife and kids when I'm gone. I use a Charles Daly 1892 Winchester replica .45 colt for rifle season, a J.D. Berry Viper longbow (when it comes in) for archery season and my Viper and 20 ga. side by side for upland birds and turkey. All I'm lacking is a good ML so I can hunt ML deer season. If anyone knows of someone who is looking to trade a good full stock ML in .45-.50 cal for a longbow, I have a 2007 J.D. Berry Appollo for trade. It's a $910 longbow with yew core, 66" draws 56#@30". I don't plan on trading though till I get my Viper in. Then I'll put it in the classifieds for trade, "if" I still have it...hint hint...lol

Thanks again all!

you could always get a percussion gpr, i know they arent a "fullstock" but, you can get the kits for about $300 or so, and they are easy to assemble. they come in .50 and .54 cal. and are tack drivers out to about 150 yards! once you own one you will love it. i own other rifles all full stock, im a gun builder and i specialize in building isaac haines lancasters, but thats out of your price range. my point is, my gpr gets more shooting time than any other front stuffer i own!

DelSnavely

Thanks Crow, I may have to do that and just sell it later when I have enough for what I want.

Thanks again.

i'll tell you right now the only thing wrong with that theory, its a great gun! you will fall in love with it! and when the time comes, hell these front stuffers are like peanuts, you cant stop at one! i fyou ask the people here and on my forum about there gpr's, they all love them and have other half and full stock rifles, but the gpr always finds its way into thier harts.

kit_carson

oh yeah, i forgot. if you do get a kit dont hesitate to ask for help getting it finished! i know for a fact there are a few people here besides my self that would be happy to help walk you through the build. they go to gether real easy, and make a great first build!

Just a few questions. Where would you recommend getting a kit? Will I need any special tools that I may not have already? Are the fixed rear sights as good as the adjustable? I just went through the "Your favorite gun" thread. MAN I had to go get a bib...drool drool...lol

I deffinately understand what you mean by them being like peanuts. I found out the same thing with traditional bows. That's why I'm BROKE!...lol

Thanks!

i would recommend getting the kit! its easy to build, and you will know the gun when you are finished. you wont need any special tools, and this is the best part, you will have the saticfaction of having built the gun yourself! it will be a one of a kind. a reflection of what you think it should look like.

oh yeah, mine has the fixed rear site, and i like it, takes a bit to learn the "Kentucky windage" but when you do! last sunday i was hitting a 6" in dia. steel plate at 125 yards

INLINE!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o  Man, dont go over to the dark side!!!!!!!!!!! If I may suggest something here, start cruising the pawn shops and other traditional ML sites, theres nothing wrong with a gently , pre shot rifle, you'll find that in most cases in alot of pawn shops there will be some TC's and CVA's hanging in there that guys bought on a whim, shot a few times and then they were put in the back corner and forgot about till times got tough and they needed some cash flow(LIKE NOW!), nothing wrong with a pre shot ML, heck half of them Ive seen in pawn shops lately are just barley broke in, takes a couple hundred shots on a new barrel to get them to settle down and shooting same hole shots from the bench, take a drop in bore lite with you and check em out, no pits or major rust in the bore, then check the lock spring to see if its good and strong and makes a crisp snap when you cock it, other than that, looks can be fixed, no sir, nothing wrong with a pre owned front stuffer, just wish i had the bank to start picking these up for more shining times to resell again! and dont forget to dicker with the guy behind the counter, take cash! cash talks, alot of the shop owners will come down a bit if they can pocket the cash and not have to run it through the books, hope this helps, Jim

Thanks a bunch Crow. I'll look into getting one once my new bow gets here and I sell my Appollo longbow. I can't wait to get this all figured out and done. I'm gonna do my best to fill that freezer.  ;D

LOL, Leather...I will check the pawn shops, and I "promise" I won't go inline... :D
