I see nothing wrong with the saddle and tack.......its leather , Its not english, no its not a cook saddle of todays time frame ......you can't really see enough of the sadlle or the tree to be able to tell what kind or time period saddle it is, the bridle has nothing wrong with it, its silver and leather and leather reins. what more do you want?

The back ground is basically correct, as that is Castle Rock out side of Cody WY

From what I see the cantle on saddle has a low cheyenne roll which is of a later date of the 1870 period western saddle . Most early saddles had a higher cantle of 4 or more inches. The earlier saddlles were also mostly  centerfire rigged and didnt have rear cinchas . In this painting the rear chincha appears to be rigged too far forward as well . The saddle should have been a military type, Santa Fe or Mexican Vaquero styling for the period .
This appears to be a painting from a modern photograph of an individual and his gear in my humble opine  ;D I'll go back in my hole now bunkr

Back in the days of the Buckskin Report they once had an article on fur hats with brims being correct.

Boy I miss that magazine ! It was the best thing goin !

I'm no expert, but the only thing i see wrong is it isn't hanging in my house!!

The revolver might be OK unless the painting had a date on it prior to the mid 1850's .

Um,...eagle feathers hanging from his hat while he is obviously not Native American.  Furthermore, he's not being thrown to the ground and being cuffed by U.S. Fish & Wildlife, BATF, FBI, and Hillary Clinton. :o

Looks like he's carrying a revolver on his right hip!
Modern leather stitched work glove (one)!
Stitching on belt looks more like modern western wear!
Modern horse tack!
Rifle looks to be a TC or GPR flinter?
A Mountainman or Trapper wouldn't of worn eagle feathers, unless he wanted to loose his topknot!
Powder Horn looks like he stopped at Cabela's on the way to the mountains!

Stumblin Wolf

Ya mean he didn't pick that horn up in saint looie?! ROFL

William

Calcutta maybe, to get that plastic looking horn.

I'll play.

Revolver might could be a pass if it was a Patterson.  I don't know what sorta brain tain mixture he used but considering his age, I'd say he had "granny blue-hair" buckskins.  Saddle blanket looks like it was made by El Paso Saddle Blanket Company.  Yoke-style shirt, laced together, square-cut fringe.  No throatlatch on the bridle.  Sears and Roebuck Saddle.  Concho on the knife sheath or holster on the left side.  The "dog face" beard.
