You want to seal after the stain is applied
I use a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits for my sealer
I put it on thick and heavy for 10-15 minutes or until the wood stops soaking it up

FrankG

After the 50/50 has cured out I use Formbys Tung Oil finish put on in several very light coats over several days . But you could use Tru Oil if you want and knock it down with steel wool for a duller finish.

i have some Birchwood-Caseys sealer and Formbys low gloss tung oil for a final finish.

FrankG

That should do it  thmbsup

I suggest you spend a lot of time whiskering your stock. And go slow with the stain let it dry real good between coats, same with the sealer and Tung oil finish

Jerry,by whiskering do you mean raising the grain with water the smoothing back down with say oooo steal wool.

A couple extra times spent on getting to wood real slick will make a great finish a lot easier

FrankG

Best thing for curing finish is natural full sun (if it shines again , been beginning to wonder lately) In dreary weather close proximity to a wood stove is next best .

one more question guys, should i do the whiskering between coats of stain or before i ever apply it. hey! Frank, been 60 degree weather bright and sunny here for the past three days, sorry just had to rubb that in blah

FrankG

Before staining and if you use water based stain after each coat.

DON'T USE STEELWOOL FOR WHISKERING!!!!! If you leave behind little pieces of wool, the water will rust the wool and you'll have a freckled stock The finest paper I use is 280 wet dry. Any finer and you run the possibility of polishing the wood, preventing any thing from properly soaking into the stock.

Ive never ran into this , lucky I guess , but Ive read this before from several people . But then again when I do the 50/50 blo/M spirit I rub first heavy sloppy coat in with 000 steel wool to blend then wipe excess off then reapply 2 or 3 times before switching to pure blo . Then wipe off as it bleeds out .
