It's a 30" diameter plate we set up for visiting young'uns. You are right about the angle, set to deflect into the ground and avoid "flyers". The target gets painted with spray paint and renewed as needed, using a little masking tape for an X. These days it's got all kinds of colors. For round ball even thin 1/4" plate can be plenty. But a center fire can cut right through even thicker plate.

All fulla holes from somma that 8mm Turk ammo at 100 yds.
