Heading to Limington Maine this Saturday for the start of their monthly shoots. Gunna try my hand at pistol shooting this time around. Don't expect a high score just doin it as a challenge. Will probably try 25 or 50 yard off hand shooting as well. Will give you all a report when I get my scores.

Best of luck with your shooting, topbreak.  Where is Limington Maine?  Interesting to hear about the monthly shoots up here.  The Ancient Ones of Maine have regular rendezvous although I have not been able to make it to any of them so far.  If you're anything like I am a pistol shoot will be a toughie.

Yeah pistols arn't my  strong suit but I'm doing it for the fun and challenge. Limington is near Cornish, ME not far from the NH border.

Pistols, not any more.  My right elbow won't last through a match and left handed my wrist is shot and won't last either.  Doesn't matter, I had trouble keeping my holes on the target at the last NMLRA match I shot years ago...Still fun shooting just as a casual activity at rondi's or with friends...

Before I became old and decrepit I won trophies & matches and was a master class shooter.  I taught pistol craft/shooting/accuracy at a police academy in another state.  Now I often can't see the sights well at all and have hand tremors and ra.  I very rarely shoot pistols nowadays.  But somehow or other I ended up getting first place in a pistol match - several years ago - hosted right here on this sight TMC.

Recoil from heavy pistol loads do not treat my wrists and hands with any respect whatsoever!  Much shooting results in much pain afterward.  This includes all magnum revolver calibers and my .50 flintlock pistol.

Keep it up Dan, I gotta live vicariously through someone!

I was a very good pistol shot at one time but now I'm just adequate. Old eyes with macular degeneration starting = the main reason.

Some pistol stocks like the Bisley and even that on single-action Colts flip the barrel upward during recoil lessening the felt recoil. The recoil of a double-action type revolver is bad news. Muzzleloading stocks are some of the worst for punishment.

with pistols I`ve always been fair at best , only pistol I`ve ever owned that shot well for me was`nt a BP pistol but it was very late 19`th century , and that was a c-96 mauser broom handle . incredibly accurate ! wish I could say the same for the colt and remington replicas I`ve owned !

Well, my first time shooting the pistol in a match went ok. At 25 yards I scored a 73 out of 100 on a standard NMLRA 25 yrd pistol target. Nothing to write home about but better than than I anticipated. Its got me motivated to practice more and keep at the pistol thing for future matches.

topbreak-------Practice a little and boost your scores into the 80's range and you can hold your own in Rondy matches and other casual shoots.  National matches can put you out of the running if you aren't in the high 90's where I've never been, but I still had fun and learned a lot from the PRO type shooters.  Best of luck.. a little muscle memory build up will get you there in no time...

What, Doug said.  Plus nothing wrong with your score for a first time match.

Practicing with a flintlock pistol should teach a person about follow through.

I do ok with pistols and rifles but I have never had the arm strength for the heavy barreled ones so my rifles are lighter than many would prefer.

I once shot in "partner match" where you were given a shooting partner and you loaded your gun and handed it to your partner to shoot at the target with. I could barely hold his gun up but still shot it better than he could and of course he couldn't hit anything with mine. The reality of it was that he couldn"t shoot anything very well and I didn't try to teach him anything about it. Sometimes there isn't time and other times the person already thinks they know everything.

I used to shoot a handgun in the upper 90s now I can not seem to find the paper found the rifle did not seem hit where I pointed it.
Oh well that is the way things go.

Attended the August shoot at Limington today. It was a good news bad news kind of day. I struggled with the 25 yard off hand rifle match not doing any better than 38 points out of 50. However, my pistol shooting was improved. I shot an 83x out of 100 at 25 yards offhand. I was struggling to score in the 70's in previous matches. My groups today were much more consistent with no wild fliers. Next month I hope to keep improving my scores in both rifle and pistol matches.
