I am building a rifle for myself, that I have wanted for some time. It will have curly maple, , brown steel furniture, grease hole in the stock, between 38-42" GM 15/16ths, .54 round ball barrel, Large Siler lock, Davis double set triggers. This will be between a Barn Gun/Southern rifle. For the butt stock, no iron butt plate, but a big slice of deer antler, for top and bottom toe on the butt. I have access t 4 original rifles built in the county where I live, on the Tenn./Kentucky border, two have this type butt stock with antler toes. Now I know a .54 is a bit big, but I have had phenomenal success with .54s hunting over the years, especially at long ranges, past 100yds. I like a gun that is muzzle heavy, but after inletting the barrel into the stock, it is a bit too heavy, removing 4-5 inches, will make it much more balanced. I am using a tenn. style triggerguard, 2-3 ramrod thimbles, no entry pipe, will look a lot like a Dixie Tenn mt. rifle. I may need help posting pics as Iprogress with the build, all help, feedback appreciated. One thing I will do, is full length glass bed the barrel, and tang/breechplug area. Every rifle I have bedded, has shot better, Modern centerfire or trad ML rifle, that I have built, except one. A Weatherby Vanguard in .308 Win., nothing helped it!

Eagerly anticipating what sounds like a awesome rifle. Give a holler (and by holler I mean a PM) if you want help with your pictures when the time comes.
I am the one your mom warned you about!

I like what you're describing.  but you need to carry a back-up pistol if you go after those carnivorous squirrels, man but those things are fierce.  Yes, pictures are a MUST.  hntr
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

I was starting to think that building a rifle for yourself was considered sacrilegious... I think that every build I have seen on here has had a "for the guy next door" or something tacked onto to it....  :mini-devil-28492:       'SNTY"

Please take pictures if you can showing us the development of this project.... And a range report when you get it done!    flwa
