Cemetery gun, 1710. Cemeteries set up this flintlock weapon at the foot of a grave, armed with three tripwires strung in an arc. When a grave robber triggered the device, the gun -- mounted a mechanism that allowed it to spin freely -- shot the intruder.

A few years ago there was a farmer that was raising watermelons in the desert about 45 miles east of me. During the day the melons would warm in the sun and at night the rattlesnakes would come in and curl up around them. He claimed he never lost a single melon.
