I do not know alot about this stuff other then what I have read. Can anyone tell me more about this stuff? Can you use it to wipe between shots at the range? Can you mix it with water for general cleaning after a day at the range? Also can you use it as a rust preventitive in the bore for long term storage? Also can you wipe down the outside of the muzzleloader to include the stock with this stuff? As of now I use Barricade in the Bore for long term storage and I have never had any problems. I am just curious to know a little about Ballistol and its purposes, when you should dilute it and when its used full strength and if it would hurt anything to always use it full strenght. Thankyou, Respectfully, cowboys1062.

It doesn't work well as a rust preventative, otherwise the claims are at least partly true.

Try www.ballistol.com. You might find some answers there.

I have used it for cleaning yes,but as far as rust, nowhere near Barricade in that department. [conf]

Stick with Barricade for long term rust prevention, both in the bore and on all metal surfaces.  Ballistol can be mixed with water and then used to soak your shooting patch material in.  You let it then dry and use just like any patch material, as per Dutch Schoultz.  This is referred to as dry patch lube and can work quite well.  A mixture of Ballistol and some other things or alone works for some people for cleaning, shooting and swabbing patches.

I use a 50/50 mix ballistol and water to clean my sixguns. Use plain water on rifles. For oil though usually use CLP or Rem oil. I do have one rifle i am using olive oil as an experiment.

Barricade is about as good as it gets for a barrel rust preventer after cleaning and drying well.Ballistol is a water soluble oil and outrageously expensive,IMHO.I use a water soluble oil I get from a friend that has a machine shop and buys the stuff in 50 gal lots.On another unamed site I suggested this as a substitute for Ballistol in Dutch's system.Wow did I get shelled!Main complaint was that it likely contained additives that would somehow affect performance in Dutch's system and or harm the rifle.I find that a little hard to accept since I have been using the stuff for some years with no difference I can see, along with the fact that my friend uses the stuff like a shower bath on electronically controlled machine tools that cost well into 6 figures.I guess I gored the holy grail, the great god Ballistol.Oh well.Might I also add that this site is by far the best on the net,the people here put up with a person like me that likes to try something different.

Another vote for Barricade. RIG is better for long-term storage but messier too.

Ballistol smells bad!  :-&

I use Ballistol for a patch lube during hunting and I also wipe my down my gun stock with it. I have never used it for a rust preventative.
