Well I got one more piece I was missing for my black powder powder collection.... I now have pistols, rifles, smoothbores, flintlocks, percussion guns and... drum roll.... a cannon...









1 3/4 inch castle cannon from a friend of ours... the price was right and it stays in the group - - -

   I don't believe this. I didn't think it was possible, but now I am officially jealous!!   

We made one a few years ago out of HP steam pipe about 20" long with an 1 3/4" bore. That bore is perfect for a patched golf ball. We the unknowing at the time poured in 4 oz of Pyrodex (remember, this was before I got addicted to BP, or maybe was the impetus) and lit the fuse, trying to fire that golf ball out 400 yards. As far as we know it is still in orbit somewhere.

Now I know where that singed smoking golf ball came from that dented my truck!  Re-entry burned it pretty good.

I have been on the firing crew of this thing before as has Old Salt (who can tell you an interesting tale, about standing behind it when it is being fired.... if you get him a good cup of coffee!)...  I know how far back the recoil sends this weapon.  Yes I said it this one deserves so much respect when using it that I use the dreaded term weapon for it.  It is definitely not a toy! 

To put all further question to rest No I have not fired it.  I don't have any canon powder right now, and I have to wait a bit to be able to order some (canon powder ain't cheap anymore). Although I have 4 pounds waiting for me 2 hours away I will have to wait until we can coordinate a day for me to go get the powder.  I think the memorial day weekend will be the soonest I can get the beast to roar.

After reading all your wise and knowing replys - I'm still not convinced that this little item is what everyone wants in their living room so knowing that it will rust if left outside I think an appropriate place would be to redecorate the front dining area!!  Get rid of dining table as never eat there and add lots of pretty potted plants with the baby snuggled in among them.
