Hi guys, brand new to muzzleloading and the board here. Did some horsetrading for a TC Hawken on a whim and I'm more pumped about that gun than any gun I've bought in a long time. Anyways, I'm kind of picking up all the stuff I need as I go and its time for a possibles bag, was wondering if anyone had tried the one Frost River sells, linked below. I have a few of their waxed canvas canoe bags (very similar to Duluth pack, but a little nicer and a little cheaper) and they are top notch, classy and durable. Also I'm kind of mulling over how big of a bag I'm going to need for hunting, any advice or info would be welcome.

Unless you're planing to get into re-enactments,and just wanting a possibles bag, carry that which you like thmbsup it's your kit.  But I  tell you this nothing is more of a thrill than to make your plunder by & for yourself.

try your hand at making your own . my first was made in 79 , it`s still being used by the kid who bought it ! and you get to put in what you want , not what someone else thinks is needed .  one I did back several years ago . have made many bags over the past 36 years . it can be addictive !

I wouldn't hesitate to second the vote for Greybear. I have several of their bags and they are hard to beat for value and quality.

As has been said, if you're not getting into re-enacting or anything period correct then use whatever you want and what works for you.  One thing about this forum is if it's cheap, it's good.  Repurposed, recycled and re-sewn gets a lot of attention here no matter what kind of item it is.  One thing I can say for sure though is that you will always start out carrying more than you really need to in your shooting bag.  This may lead to getting bigger bags or simply smaller tools but I've never seen anyone get into muzzle loading and have only one bag even if they only have one gun.  Having said that, I would recommend that your shooting bag be made of leather for the simple reason is that it's durable.  Use it for storage or a rest for your stock while shooting from the bench, a cloth bag won't hold it's shape well enough in that instance.  Get a bag with an adjustable strap as well so that you determine for yourself over time what length is best for you and your conditions be it hunting or target shooting.  There are at least one set of plans for making your own bag here on TMotC as well as links for sources of leather and other building materials, in case you want to go that route.  This can save you a lot of money by making your own if you've got the time and the area for projects.

william is correct ! making your own is cheaper , and you can have those things you might want ( powder measure and vent hole pick holders on the strap , horn can be attached ,or on a different strap , extra inside pockets for the small things . and yes you will very likely start of with more stuff than you need ! if you make your own , or buy one with an adjustable strap , it`s a good idea to have the buckle on the part of the strap that will cross your back .  a buckle in the front tends to catch on things ! dig into some books , look at originals , and decide what you want .  then have fun  thmbsup

I recently acquired another bag (used) made by The Leatherman.  Really good stuff but if I may make my next one.

I only have three bags but I made two of them and a friend gifted me the third.  If  you don't have the right weight leather, a lighter leather, buckskin, for example, can be either lined with canvas or made from canvas and reinforced with pieces of leather.  That's what I did with one of mine.  I made it from canvas and reinforced the bottom and the flap with deerskin.  The other one i made from a quality grade leather piece given to me.  It's fun and the satisfaction can't be put into words.  IMHO making your own stuff is a large part of the fun of muzzleloading.

On the left is the all leather one and the right is the canvas & buckskin bag.  They're actually hunting/shooting bags so are not that large.

We have several bags we have gotten along our journey, some made by us and others made by friends and/or members of this site, some of whom have passed to the great beyond.  Each bag has it's own story and purpose for being but the one I like to grab when I am out puttering around the property here is a denim one we made when we were trying to figure out what "the perfect bag would be"   It is made from a pair of old blue jeans and must have about 100 inside and outside pockets of varying sizes to hold everything from a 32 cal ball bag to a full pound of 3F powder, and Co2 discharge systems, caps, big balls, shot the kitchen sink and everything else you can think you might need... including the cell and gps and spare batteries...  pnic  It is not pc but it is mine!
