how does one go about pouring a pewter nose cap,,,, or a pewter anything for that matter..

beowulf

carefully  ROFL   . take it from one who learned the hard way !  several different ways to go about it , the one I generally  use is undercutting the wood where the nose cap will be ,wrap it with brown paper , block any holes you dont want filled with pewter , and pour the metal in . it cools enough to harden very quickly , .after it`s cool enough to work file and sand it to the final shape and dimensions you want , then polish it up !  others can probably give you some better advice , but I dont have the best tools and have spent the last four decades making due ! hope this is some help , I taught myself , so everything I do is probably bass ackwards   ROFL

hmmmm,,,, how carefully.....  pnic ROFL

pewter like lead has an ......adverse reaction to water ! lol and your paper dam should be snug where it is in contact with the wood , dont want any run through ! . overall it`s fairly simple !

VERY, VERY carefully!
I am the one your mom warned you about!

If you get a lil creative with the dams and such, you can eventually create some
nice moulding/affects with Pewter!! takes some care and lots of prep, but do-able!

Go to www.americanlongrifles.org click on the forum box. Go to the tutorials threads. Second page find the how to pour a nose cap by Ken G. It should confirm your desire to do a pour OR discourage you altogether. Either way, you'll have learned something. Good luck!!

do a practice piece on a chunk of wood thats not important . you can always remelt the pewter . it`s not that hard and you can do some cool things with it !

metalshaper

Beowulf is right, never hurts to practice!

and if you get a pin hole or a void... with a lil practice and a good soldering iron you can make an invisible repair, if need be..

( of course if you are ham handed,,,  you can ruin it pretty quickly ! )
