Nice curly maple stock and Rayl barrel

What we have here are what I think is an old Fort Hill curly maple stock, and an Ed Rayl .54 caliber smoothbored barrel.

The stock is graded "Super". I wouldn't go quite THAT good, since along the left side of the forend out toward the muzzle the curl fades and thins just a little -- still very good but not as tight and vivid as all over the rest of the stock. It's 95% inletted for a 1" diameter barrel of up to 44" length. It's technically a lefthanded stock, but there is enough mass to the butt area that even with an ample cheekpiece and a small amount of cast-off it could be re-shaped for righthanded use with a fairly wide buttplate. You can look at the pictures and realize that shaping this stock will involve a fair amount of wood removal, so re-shaping for righthanded use won't realistically add any labor to the final product. Not shown in the pictures is that the ramrod hole was done largely by routing down through the bottom flat of the forend -- a detail I remember from the Fort Hill products. Plenty of mass to the wood for shaping to just about any profile you might wish or imagine. $190, shipped to your door

The barrel is a new-old-stock Ed Rayl, 38" x 1", .54 caliber smoothbore. This barrel has been fitted for lefthanded use with an early-style flared-tang plug and a 3/8" diameter vent liner. However, the liner is centered a bit over 7/8" ahead of the breech end of the barrel, with its rearmost threaded surface flush with the face of the breechplug. Using a mill or a few very careful swipes of a flat file, the plug can be re-indexed half a turn and the barrel becomes suitable for righthanded use. No other work has been done to this very nice piece of steel. $185, shipped

If you buy both the stock and barrel, total price, shipped, will be $350 -- a savings of $25.

My minimum post requirements, for buyers, are different from the forum's. You need to have at least 10 posts of actual discussion to purchase from me. Brief comments such as "Me, too" or "Yep" or mostly-smiley posts don't count. Thanks.

The stock sold and I believe I will keep the barrel for a smoothrifle project, somewhere down the line.
