Hoppes(so I've heard) has the same ingredient that airplane glue has which makes you want to "sniff "it.
also heard it'd addictive.  Anything that'll clean your gun will also work as a patch lube. Water, water with a squirt of soap (very slose to spit), windex, 409.  plastic bag of patches and enough water to make them wet
carried in your coat pocket works well, I see lot of shooters doing that. Anything oily helps with rust but not as much with shooting. Hank

I have HEARD that if using Windex, NOT the ammonia version. It seems ammonia and BP fouling work together to eat up a barrel.
Don't know, not a chemist, but this is the gist of another thread on a different site.

thmbsup Yep you are correct there Dogshirt .The ammonia will react with the salts in blackpowder fouling. I have used window cleaner from the dollar tree just get the kind with vinegar and no ammonia or just the kind with no ammonia. It works really well for cleaning the fouling. And at a buck for a 32 ounce spray bottle ya cant beat the price. Soot i use several methods that all work about the same.Usually its whichever bottle I happen to grab off the bench.

Well, you gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?

I have found, for what it is worth at the price that I offer it, is that ...........I like the flavor of olive oil, by itself, ....if I were to be forced to taste it......yum. If not, a moosemilk of Ballistol has been working wonders and will keep for a while in the recent heat,....though by the smell, it will not be augmented by spit unless ejected in the general direction.............no way is that going in my yap. :-&

ROFL Whats wrong there Blackfeet, dont ya like the stinky feet smell?     :-&

Not the smell that I have a problem with bro, but the taste is another matter..........

I use streight Olive Oil. I fill the bottom of a small plate with Olive Oil and put a few patches in at a time, wring them out and put them in a baggie. I thought about adding a little beeswax and nuking the whole mix....ain't got around to that yet.
I've even been known to use streight Olive Oil as a barrel preservative.

I'm currently using a 1:5 mix of water soluble machinist oil and winter window washer fluid for my paper punching. Seems to work well so far........tight patch and ball go down fairly easily, the washer fluid evaporates pretty quickly and consistent results.  Usually use mink oil from Track during hunting season.

It also seems, Hank, that black powder is addictive.....and....I prefer wind blown "whiffs" over actually sniffing it.  I guess I was a lost cause long ago.  ROFL

I'm only a month late to this thread.  hdslp

Napa Auto Parts sells a water soluble cutting oil.  I mix it 9:1 with water.  9 parts water - 1 part cutting oil.  It works.

If I'm at the range, I swab out after every shot.  Don't see a reason NOT to.  The rods right there.  I keep a lubed patch on the jag.  I'll change that patch out every 15-20 shots.

I use spit patches and have never had any issue - I swab with olive oil after every 10 or so shots usually and use olive oil on all my rifles as a rust preventative
