Since I know absolutely nothing about  scrimshawing can it be done well on deer antler ? I had thoughts of antler inlays with small furry woodland critters on them .Is there a better medium for this use.I was just thinking of antler as they are personal and hold meaning and memories to me and want personal touches like that on my rifle.

Thanks,Tim

Absolutely it can be done on antler as well as bone and I've seen some really beautiful examples of it.  Check out the Horner's Bench; http://thehornersbench.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=antler

To further expand on what Im thinking about doing is to imbed the horn inlay in pewter ,basically I was thinking of casting/pouring the pewter around the piece of antler. Do you think the antler would char or discolor, warp ect. if exposed to the heat .This will be for a large side plate so neither the horn or the pewter will be too awful thick.

Thanks,Tim

pewter should`nt bother the antler , at least it`s never done any harm when I`ve done that sorta thing !  and yep you can scrim it ,but its harder than horn , so take your time and be careful ! anytime you have to use a bit more force ,you tend to be likely to hurt yourself !

Thanks, I'll do a mock up and see how it comes out.
