Today a former coworker called me and ask me to come and relieve him of blacksmithing tools. My son and I picked up 2 forges, approx 15 hammers, approx 15 tongs, a post drill press (hand operated), various chisels, 200 lbs coke and 250 lbs of coal. And a sweet 165 lb anvil in wonderful shape. What a guy he turned out to be huh? Now I gotta build a shed and learn to hammer out that metal! Wish me luck!

The anvil I got has an eagle facing towards the left (while I'm looking at it) with an anchor in its talon. The guy who gave it to me swears it's and 1800's anvil from jolly old England. Can anyone tell me what it is?? I hope it's a good one!

Some folks worry about the ring of the anvil or the sound. What I look for is the rebound. I take a steel ball and drop it on the anvil from 4 in. and see how high it bounces back up. The anvil I use has between 70 to 80% rebound
but sounds like you are hitting tin covered block of wood.
