Can those 1000 thread egypt cotton sheets be waterproofed to make a lightwieght shelter for trekkin in.

I would think that they could be with a generous application of Scotchguard... 1000 count is really tight weave... average sheet is 200 count, and around here 600 count are to expensive to use as a shelter... I can get 10 oz painters tarps for less.   bunkr

Just about any fabric can be made to be water resistant. I hesitate to ever use the term "waterproof". In my experience, water is relentless and it will eventually find its way into almost anything. As stated above scotch-guard will work but I prefer to stretch the fabric pretty taut and roll on a generous coat of Thompsons water seal. one to two coats will do just fine. A word of caution though, any fabric that is continuously folded in the same manner each time will begin to leak along the crease lines no matter what you use and how many coats.

I will second the item about folding... My camp tent is at going on thwenty or more years old.... and to my knowledge has never been folded the same way twice... I drop the tent, (dry it out if needed) and gather it into a big ball and stuff it into a bag for storage... The gent I got it from told me he would take it back if he ever caught me folding it into a nice neat square.. and I know him well ewnough that he means every word he utters !
