Well spent some time cleanin up from the last three builds today , whew, I ended up with a whole feedsack full of shavins and wood chips ! Revamped my vise set up to work a little better I hope .

After I get finished cleaning the bench I'm going to get started on my 32 flinter and thought I'd take a lot of pics and share with everyone my 'Hayseed School of Smithin' way that I've been doin things . Some are a little unorthodox compaired to others methods but they work for me the way I was 'home schooled' without supervision lol !!

I aint a professional nor have I ever slept at a Holiday Inn  ! lol lol  ;D

The stock is a curly maple blank I've had for 25 yrs or better that I salvaged from a mess up when I tried to use a duplicator that wasnt designed for long stocks 20 yrs back. I was able to salvage this for a skinny build so am glad I didnt throw it in the wood stove !The duplicator is residing in the shed !

The barrel is a used Dixie Tenn. barrel I bought off another board and has an excellent bore .

Lock is a Barnett waterproof pan type that i've had for some time also , actually had the forsight to buy several when TOW had them years ago . They are a snappy little lock and well made , too bad they dont have them any longer.

I got a little jump start on it awhile back and inlet the barrel and ramrod with basic shape cut out so we will go from there . I made a post in the patterns section of the procedure I use now that is easier than my past methods.

Wholly Crow , whats this ? I was just out for a bit tryin ta clean up some mess so's I could start a new one. ;D Prolly be another day afor y'all git to poke fun at the "Hayseed Smithin Institute " lol lol !!!  ;D

FrankG

Well ya coaxed me  ;D.........

Heres the mess I have to contend with before I start makin a new one. Have to get the tools put back so I can find them :)
I just finished swapping out my machinest vise for the 10" woodworking vise and added a couple supports on the left and right sides of it 24" from it for supporting the stock. I stole the idea from Roy  ;D

Heres the salvaged blank from the mess up with the roto carve duplicator I mentioned above. It took some plannin and whittlin but I think i made it with this skinny little barrel inlet into it .

Heres the shot of the forestock after bandsawing the oops away.

The forestock petered out and was too thin because of the 'wow' the duplicator made and I had to cut the stock back and add a hunk so I used a hunk of walnut for grins. When I pull the barrel out I'm going to cut some grooves inside the channel on the 45deg flats that overlap the walnut and maple to epoxy in some threaded screw stock for strength on the tip.

Here is a shot of the ramrod groove after its hogged out with chisels and scrapers. It still needs a bit of sanding with dowel wrapped in sandpaper.

Roy

you call that a mess  ???  man you haven't seen my shop LOL.    'bout time for them pics LOL.  ;D

FrankG

This is after shovlin the chips and shavins and then sweepin it out . Most likely a whole nuther stock in chips and shavins in that sack   ;D !

Wont be any progress other than cleanin up till after I've made meat   ;D

Roy

Then you can come down and work on my shop... right??  ::) ::) ::) ;D

FrankG
