Okay folks here is an interesting one There is a hole in the pan on a rifle which allows ALOT of burnt powder into the rear of the lock and consequently down into the trigger mech. This gums the trigger and one of two things is happening the trigger will sometimes become almost impossible to pull or the hammer will not lock back when set. The suggestion has been made to use a little JB Weld to seal the hole just looking for some thoughts. Oh yea it is a double set trigger

pictures aren't the best but you can see that I put a piece of paper under the hole it almost appears that this was deliberate but I can't be sure

bmcret Short of having the pan welded or Braised up [hmm]  A product called PYRO-PUTTY might work.
It can be used to Repair Exhaust Manifolds etc....
It is a two part high heat Epoxy.

i do not know the proper way to fix the problem but will contact a gun make frind and find out,
I would strongly suggest that you DO NOT fire the gun until it is fixed, as it is a very bad saftey hassard at his time. I a spark should get behind the lock it could
blow the lock off in you face.
Will get back to you sa soon as I can contact two toes

Thanks for the quick response and did not plan on shooting until fixed

What make lock? Did it come on the gun to you that way? It looks as if it was drilled (very round hole). I think I would tap it and run a bolt into it, cut it off and peen it a bit, then grind/polish it off.
It's not safe that a way!! If the powder is gumming the DST mechanism it could blow outta there too (susp) What possessed someone to do that???  Be careful!!!!!!

So after years of use the Burning powder jet from the touch hole did this?
Or?!? [hmm]
Was the touch hole to close to the bottom of the pan?!?
Is this a common thing with a Flintlock?

never seen anything like that before . skrt  I`d probably ,( being a master at jury rigging ) put a small piece of brass rod in the hole and peen it on both sides . but thats just me . probably better to have someone weld it shut .

gordy

Thats a zinger  [hmm]Never saw one like it.Certainly looks like the hole was drilled , for what purpose I can only guess. I see no reason that a soft brass wire swaged in the hole and filed or ground off with a Dremel tool wouldn,t work. If you ever find how and/or why it got there be sure to post it.

My brain went into overload when I saw this ... Looks like it was put there to feed a wire loop through to keep the lock from opening because it was going to be a wall hanger.....

[ /quote]   never thought of that , but it does make sense !

Red basger that could very well be never thought of that I bought from someone that has some hangers but I shot it live before discovering the hole and it shoots real nice so I'm just going to try to fix it. It is a Dixie lock so if I really mess it up I know I can replace it.

JB Weld won't work, it will burn up. Find someone with a wire feed welder, just tap it a couple times then file away the excess...

Blackfeet

bmcret, I have a wire feed if you decide to go that route. Is this from the squirrel rifle?

bmcret

thanks rev never thought that way. yes blackfeet it is know that rev said it will burn this has happened over some time so maybe there was something in there at one time that just burnt out.

Go get your tap and die set...tap with biggest tap that will fit..then get set screw at hardware store and screw it in.   will plug hole right up and be permanant fix.. No Idea why a hole would be there..
