i heard a referance to cotton canvas shoes with leather soles any truth to this or could it be PC

yes there were canvas shoes with leather soles, yes they would be pc, but they would not be location correct.

deck shoes were canvas top for sailors that had them... don't know what the soles were made of.

I saw reference once, can't remember where, that English workers in wet leather tanning, soap factories etc., sometimes wore sail cloth (canvas) leather soled over-boots, that the soles were "tarred" on the bottoms for wet floor and deck conditions. I think it was used mainly in England and probably wouldn't be to popular for many today!
