i have my old hickory knifein a sheath hanging from my sash how should the throwing knife be wore

Watauga

I see a lot of folks tuck them in the back of there sash but I would be afraid of loosing it if I did that.
I guess the old timers carted around Hawks and Knives that way?!?

out here we all pretty much attach it to our belts or sash. never really see anyone just tucking them in.. plus at some of our shoots we have some stations where you must hold your rifle and throw your hawk & knife.   flwa

Alot of the time my knife is in a sheath, and I just tuck my tomahawk in the back of my belt. Never really had a problem with it, that way it doesn't clank or hit other things.

I just tuck my hawk in the back of my sash or belt. With the curve of the blade, it locks itself in really. Throwing knife I carry in a sheath. One could just carry it though. I believe a throwing knife was often only brought out at vous. They were usually soft iron and of little use around camp. They would bend and just be pounded straight again. So perhaps, most were simply carried in a bedroll... or some other way. But mine sees a sheath for easy carrying with my gear when I pack so it doesn't bang anything up. Just my opinion. I wouldn't want a heavy throwing knife pulling my belt down all day.

I recently found a knife from smoky mountain knife works. It's kind of a carbon steel blade bowie but had no cross guard and the bone handles came off and were replaced with leather.
I personly hate throwing knives as they mostly are cumbersome big ol choppers that genraly arent made from a good carbon steel and not very useful for anything else.I much prefer a simple scalper but they won't stand up to throwing very long without snapping in two.
My buddy found one like I have a Kalamazoo and they make a decent belt knife that will stand up to throwing.

captkody

you could always use a neck sheath. on the back of the neck. saw it in a movie and thought it was a good idea
just my two cents on the subject

Red Badger

I usually  tuck my hawk into my belt on my right side but stated sliding it around to the middle of my back (just have to remember it is there before I sit), after I accidentally scratched my beautiful horn that Stumblin wolf made me, now the red badger name on the horn has a nice white scratch across the name... (No comments about white stripes!)  as for my throwing knife, I like to tuck it in the top of my high moccs or in my leggings so I can get to it

I personally do not carry a throwing knife, I do carry a 10 in butcher knife in a rawhide lined sheath to keep from cutting the the sheath.
It is my personnel opinion that to throw a knife is the last thing you do before dying, and if push come pull that 10 in butcher will do just as well.

probabley crodadlie dundee.

why would you carry rhe extra weight of a throwing knife?
why would you throw a knife in the woods or while trapping?

crazell

I always have a knife on me. I only carry my hawk and throwing knife if we're on that trail. Not every rondy has the H&K on the shooting trail. When I do carry them, my knife is in a sheath on the right. My hawk is on the back side of my belt in it's sheath.

Is it documented any where that the trappers, colonials or mountain men had a knife specifically for throwing?  Seems a waste to have a knife that is only good for nothing but throwing.  I'd prefer a knife that is strong and razor sharp and as old salt said only throw in the final act of desperation.  A knife can't do much if its not in being wielded in your hand.  Just my opinion!

Well I'm sure you could throw any knife if needed, yes last resort to throw it. The throwing knife I have can be used for just about everything. The competition is fun and enjoyable. I'm sure at some point someone threw their knife, hawk, traps or anything else to get away. So have fun with it.Personally it's just more stuff to have and use.
