Last bunch of tallow I used was from a nice fat doe It seems like the bucks work theirs off but sometimes you get a doe really loaded with it.Back to the original question of where to get a cheap source-Go to Price Chopper,Shoprite, Piggly -Wiggly and get some Crisco/lard More than you'll ever use in one can.I find it a bit soft but it makes excellent lube.I know you said you don't have the time or inclination to make your own but if you found some time, melt Crisco and add an equal amount of wax, beeswax pref. but hell, any old candle stubs will do and when it's cool you'll have a slightly stiffer lube,-Just one thing- a small thing-do this with an old pan not mama's preferably ,if you use hers clean it-It's tricky to get wax all off, you have to heat it and wipe it out while hot but don't leave in the sink for her to clean! I know, this sounds like  a no brainer to us old seasoned guys but if your still young[I was 45 or so before I learned this.[!?] and don't consider that it's not just grease but a less soluble  wax now you might be tempted to just leave it in the sink,Seems right ?huh?,after all, your done with it,right? It's probably best to just have your own little pan for stuff like that.Do it when home alone, and keep the heat low.

Deer tallow is the best.  Unfortunately, the last 2 horned things I shot didnt have much on them.  Perhaps I need to hunt closer to corn field!  (or get a doe tag...).  Anyways, Dixie got some more mutton tallow in, in limited quantities, so I shall be a makin' Gatofeo's lube by the weekend!

I have been using crisco as a lube in the base of minnie balls when i shot muskets . I now use it for patch lube works great for me and its cheap keeps the bore real sweet I put it on both sides of the patchand i dont have trouble lloading      Grumpy

shootrj2003, I take that one step further and use a cheap hotplate cause no matter how careful I am, something always gets in the burners of Ma's stove  whipping.

Tip---get leg of lamb and bake to eat....save all drippings in jar, put in fridge--get tallow plug off top in the morning and use fatless drippings to eat with leftovers..great food and BP supplies on the side...

Grumpy,

I tried the crisco = it works good, but in the revolver, by the second shot, it drips and runs and makes a mess.  Plus the smell.....at least the mutton or venison tallow smells like lunch
;D

Crisco, at least in my cupboard goes bad after awhile - and mutton tallow has kept years for me. I am lazy and like to make a years or so worth at one time.

DandJofAZ,

Good idear if you dont season the meat or add wine in cooking process as I am known to do.  I hear those things do bad stuff to steel.

Oh my yes! I used some beef tallow off of a roast one time. It seemed like the salt should have been removed after boiling with some fresh water. It was a nice pistol while it lived. The next batches were made from fresh fat without seasonings. No problems later on that way.

What about bear fat? Or is it too greasy

DandJofAZ

Bear fat works, but melts real easily...use some for cold weather patch lub, but use it more for biscuits.

Maybe you could work in some beeswax to elevate the melting temp?

Hammerhead

what is mutton tallow i look at this post everyday and think  ???

Otter

Mutton tallow is the rendered fat from a sheep. Grind up or chop the fat, render over a lowish heat, strain then boil it with some water to clean up the resulting fat. I had to ask too.

crazell

It makes a good water-proofing agent too!!

Hawken50

As does bear grease, mink oil, mutton tallow der tallow. same, same diffeant animules....right???
"GOD made man and Sam Colt made em equal"
Well, you gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?

DandJofAZ

Same/same...sort of..each animal seems to have different melting temp quallities....bear at low heat end=mutton at high heat end---others in between..
