I am going to be ordering a salted buffalo hide or two in the next few weeks. It will have it's winter coat. What would be the easiest way to tan the hide/hides? If I order two of them which I probably will. I want to make a bed roll out of one and a long coat kinda like a capote out of the other. Any idea's

I am not sure there is an easy way to tan one... I would make a smart comment here but I think I will hold my tongue and let Micanopy or one of the others tell you what is involved in tanning a buffalo hide...

If I were you then I would brain tan one or two deer hides first, so you know what you're getting yourself in to.  Otherwise I would find someplace to get your buffalo hides commercially tanned.

If you tackle this than you are a brave soul than I.Crazell bought a salt hide and took it to the local taxidermist. I think he paid him 200.00 to get it done. You might ask him ???

That is certainly true.  Check these guys out for instructions and supplies; http://www.braintan.com/tanown/index.htm

scroll down the page to see how big the stretcher needs to be for a buffalo hide; http://www.braintan.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=BUFFALO&Category_Code=Furs

Thank you william. It's always nice when some one post useful info instead of trying to talk some one out of something

Hey jeco sorry if it sounded like some of us were trying to talk you out of it, it's not like that. I think everyone was first airing on the side of caution because it can be alot of money tied into one of those things. The nice thing is that a site like this is around so you can get all aspects of a project before tackling it. But if i was going to do something like this , here would be the first place I would ask any questions.  Best of luck with the hides.
