Two of my friends came over this afternoon to get  their guns ready for huntin since it comes in next Saturday. I took the usual jaw about my old rock knocker and why don't I catch up with the times. I was shooting my Mountain rifle.  You see both of them  shoot $@#$$lines.  One couldn't get his powder pellets to go off and the other had his scope knocked off.  I shot 5 times at 50 yards and had about a 3 inch group and they still hadn't got going .  I pull up a chair and start talking junk. Finally they get to shooting.  They are hitting all over the place.  Neither one shot a 3 inch group but they wanted to shoot 100 yards.  They said it would separate the men from the boys.    No better than my eye sight is I knew I would be lucky to keep up with them.  I shot twice one touching the bullseye and one just above it.  I quit with that I told them I wasn't going to shoot ones eye out.  After adjusting his scope again my friend shot 2 touching the bullseye and he give it up.  The other friend is still shooting all over the place with those pellets.  We messed a good hour or so and finally convinced him to chunk those pellets .  I didn't get him shooting black though.  I didn't blow them out of the water but me and my mountain rifle held our own.  They had to admit modern is not  necessarily  better .

I used to get a jawing over my choices for shootin even before I started usin a rock knocker. 30/30 Wichester was "to wimpy"  Savage 110 30-06 was a "cheap gun" Then I started going to older stuff- WWII Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper was "to old" Mosin Nagant M44 was a "flame thrower" then I got a caplock  "obsolete and lucky to hit at 50 yards"  rock knocker "not much better than a bow and arrow. Guess what--they dont laugh anymore as my hunts and shoots are doing just as well as they are out to and over 100 yards.

Most of the people I"ve talked to that shoot in-lines bought them because they believed all the hype and  tall tales told to them by their buddys and/or some store clerk . bs  Oft times if you don"t try to argue them down  fncg, and just go on shooting they start to get curious about why that old rock knocker or caplock seems to be doing as good or better then their in-line and start asking questions , thats when you offer to let them fire a few rounds . ;D
Now , this dosn"t mean an instant "convert" but it puts them to thinking . [hmm]

Interesting thing is when I went exclusively to MLs for hunting several years ago, my success with deer did not change at all from the days I also used scoped cartridge rifles for the regular season.  I still hunted the hay fields, too.  My "state-of-the-art" friends call me a "purist", whatever that is.
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.

Amazing how well these obsolete old things work isn't it!
One thing I noticed years ago is that my success rate is about the same, but the critters don't go as far after they are hit as when I used to use modern guns.
