Was that guy an inflatable opponent that you were just spinning around? Or was he just walking along minding his own business and you tripped him up? Remind me to never turn my back to you.  ROFL

Winter Hawk

I have a small hatchet I inherited from my father.  He was an avid Boy Scout in the Netherlands, and one of the high points of his life was going to the Jamboree in Birkenhead, England.  I believe that was around 1929, but I don't know for sure and he isn't around to ask anymore.  Anyway, he bought this little hatchet there.  It weighs 1 lb, 4 oz.  I often throw it in my pack when out in the woods, just because.

;D :mini-devil-28492: You talking to me?  You talking to me!  There's no one else here......  (Taxi Driver)

I picked up an unfinished "mini-hawk" from papa and it is CUTE! I'll get around to finishing the handle, sharpening the head and fitting them together before long.  It won't be tomorrow or the next day, but soon.  Haven't been feeling very well recently so it won't be tomorrow; but soon.

The Sensei may be able to smack me around, but since he is on the other side of the country from me,  blah.  Bringing this thread back to it's intended path, all this talk of mini hawks sparked a synapse in what's left of my brain and I remembered that I had a smaller hawk myself. So I went out to the weapon wall and there it was. This was given to me a couple of years ago by an older gentleman who said he used it when he was a scout back in the early 50's. I took the picture with one of my throwing hawks with a 19" handle for size comparison. There are no markings left on it anywhere and I don't have any idea of it's pedigree.
Now that I remember I have it I will clean it up, sharpen it and practice throwing it just in case some grey haired ninja type Virginian dressed in a gi leaps out of one of my trees intent on doing me harm. Not that it will physically stop him, but since it will be all shiny he will stop to look at it allowing me to safely run away.

Apparently while I was gone Photobucket made some changes and won't let us download pictures anymore. I will post the picture as soon as I figure out how to deal with the changes.

At first I wondered if that tiny hawk could chop off limbs, brush and such.  But I then realized it would do at least as well as a heavy bladed knife and probably even better.  I have a LARGE Bowie that I'm going to sharpen and it may get used for that purpose as well.  But you can throw the hawk!

Ahem! I can throw the knives too. (Not very well and not very far.) So does this mean I have to keep checking the trees to make sure you're not lurking up there? I guess I should also check the weapons wall to make sure you didn't snag any of the swords or spears also. The only thing worse than getting run trough with a sword or spear is if it is with your own blades. I hate that.

Thoroughly taxing whats left of my brain cells I was able to reduce the size of the picture and got it to post. Now I need to go take a nap as actually having to think has totally worn me out.

Took it upon myself to spruce up the min-hawk. sanded & polished the metal to remove all marks then blued it to give it some character. Sanded down the handle and stained it with mt favorite red/brown stain and through a few coats of tung oil on it. When I dig down to that part of my shop I will heat up some beeswax and give it a going over with that. Didn't turn out half bad, IMHO.
Again, next to a full size hawk for scale.

looks like one I`ve had since I was 16 . it was made in italy and was rather pricey at the time , has had several handles over the years . this one has been in it for the last 20 !

That bottom one looks like an exact match for mine, except yours has a way more cool handle.

if yours is an older one , like mine they probably are the same .  as I said mine was made in italy , and I`ve had it since 73 , they are still made but the newer ones ( last twenty years or so ) are made in india , that handle was a scrap piece of curly maple , finished with aqua fortis ,and boiled linseed oil ! about 15 coats rubbed in by hand and then buffed with a piece of denim .

First of all, "behave"!  I don't do no behaving; I leave that to the city slicker, "polite" crowd.  I no longer destroy just for the fun of it - and it IS fun.  If I want yer scalp, might as well cut it off yerself and save some agony.

All seriousness aside, I left most all my weepons in Ga when I moved.  All I got are a bunch of knives, most small and disguised as something else.  My forte is "environmental" weapons, ie. combs, ink pens, plastic knives (yep, you heard it right; just not the picnic variety although those are surprisingly effective) etc.  Uuh...period plastic.  [hmm]

But I do like the little hawk and my Bowie.  thmbsup
