I've been debating weather to weigh in on this one or not and decided to say just this much:  I do have a LEE R.E.A.L. mold and have shot them through "Poacher" my .54 Cabellas Hawkins... the main reason for that was to have something a bit heavier than PRB when contemplating Elk hunting in Colorado.  I have no doubt that PRB would do the job but knowing my ability to hit what I aim at I figured more bulit mass might not be a bad thing.
Well, they do carry more energy downrange than a round ball would and you'd increase the chances of getting a nice clean pass through, so as long as you've practiced using the same conical and can compensate for the increased drop in it's flight path you will be just fine.  Nothing makes up for a bad shot as you well know.  Just to satisfy my curiosity, does your Hawken shoot conicals as accurately as it does RB?

yes if I up the powder charge to 125 grains of 3F from my usual of 60 grains.

I can usually get a 15 inch group at 50 yards...  cuch  (ask Harry he has seen me shoot!)  remember those that can do... those that can't TEACH!....  :mini-devil-28492:

I have had two guns that have shot conicals very accurrately. Both were by Traditions with 1-48". First was a .54 cal and shot T/C Maxi Hunters with 120gr Pyrodex. Recoil wasn't too bad as it was around a 9 pound rifle. I could shoot one hole groups all day leaning against a tree with that rifle/load combo. I wish I still had it. :'(
The second is a .50 cal accurrate with a Hornady 385gr Great Plains with 120gr of Pyrodex. 3" groups at 50yds leaning against a tree. Being around 6 pounds it kicks like a mule on steroids.!!!!!!!!!!! hdslp

Biggest problem for me with conicals is the cost. Too darned expensive to shoot very often.
