im getting ready in a few hours to make a pair of leggings out of 10 oz cotton canvas do they have to have fringe on the outside of the legs or is it just user choice im going for ohio indiana tribes look

bmcret

Hey Hammer as far as I know the fringe wasn't that big a thing during the 18th century I think it came in later and I don't think it was ever used widly in this area that is New england New york and the Ohio valley

Hammerhead

thats probably what ill go with then cause its kinda annoying to me to put the strings to fringe it

Blackfeet

From what I have read, short fringe, if any at the side seam and  little in the way of flaps  here in the east

I'm 1/8th Shawnee but we didn't have cool leggins! I wear a Delaware style which is long fringe from the top to the knee, then a narrow flap from knee to the bottom. Cain't remember where I got the documentation but they're definitely one of a kind.

Oh yes, mine too dntn
I got my info as the eastern indian had short fringe, just over knee in length. The eastern longhunter style being the same but longer above the knee with nothing but natural fringing. I am Mohawk and Blackfeet (and French and Irish, and Scottish and Welsh pnic)

Hammerhead  just go to one of the sites for the particular tribe you are interested in and most of them have a catagory for that  tribe , or native american web site is also very helpful on everything.  Fringe,  not fringe, flaps, short, long, decorated or plain,  thight hi or attached to waist belt.  Just your persona and how much PC you want to be!!  We all still have those sunglasses in case  :mini-devil-28492:
