In using white sage, sweetgrass, tobacco or cedar you are removing negative energies and creating a sacred space. You can smudge for blessings and healing. You need to be respectful and sincere in you attitude. The best time is at the start of the day. Burn your herb the disperse the smudge or smoke with a feather. Sage will help remove negative energies, cedar to purify, sweetgrass brings about the positive energies and tobacco will fulfill your purpose or send your prayers to the creator. You can lift your smudge pot to the four directions starting with the east as that represents renewal. What you say is up to you.

Be vary careful in the amount used also.  I know from experience that Sage is a sedative and a great bug removal tool, one time used to much when smudging my tent to get some nasty mosquitoes out and almost did not wake up in the morning!   pnic

This ritual is religious, spiritual and sacred. You must believe in this. If you were baptist you wouldn't go into a catholic church and think you are catholic.
you must believe that all things have a spirit. Example in the animated movie Pocahontas she explains that all things have a spirit  not just living creatures but all plants and rocks and rivers etc.  Otherwise you are just blowing smoke.

Very few natives will explain this ritual to you.

So my question to you Hammerhead is why do you want to do this what purpose do you have.

You must also remember you shouldn't make the spirit angry as you can bring on the opposite effect.

It actually took my brother-in-law to explain it to me. He's a white man adopted by the Crow people as on of their own. In fact, he just became a Shaman within the tribe.
