I have not read the regs. I have heard it is not legal to make your own, perhaps this means Making your own to /and with the intent to distribute to others-I don't know.THEY don't want you too,because1. you could hurt others.2. you could hurt yourself[following all safety regs. and precautions still leaves a bit of risk but, most times when there was a commercial accident it was due to safety rules and /or regulations that were broken, ignored or otherwise aborted or bypassed.#3.doing it succesfully yourself makes you a little too free and independant of their control for their liking[they can't tax it, they can't control it and they can't cut  off your supply of ammunition]
No.1 and 2. should be foremost in any persons plans when considering it's production.No. 3 is foremost in the mind of governing bodies throughout the world.

Let me make this perfectly clear!  (yeah I know...)

This site does not encourage the making of your own powder. It is a very risky undertaking and even following the appropriate safety steps it is still highly a dangerous undertaking

However there are a few recipes on the internet if you do wish to try it...

Most everyone knows that it's charcoal, saltpeter and sulfer in certain amounts, but it's the technique of mixing those quantities together that get most folks injured or worse along with buildings leveled.

I found the formula in an encyclopedia in the school library back in the mid-60's. liberated the sulphur & saltpeter  from the chem lab (it was my homeroom and a couple of us helped the teacher set up for the experiments. We had taken Chem the year before) and made our own charcoal. It did go boom but our main use was small blocks to shoot or to blow things up. None of us had blackpowder guns but we ground up about 1/2 c. to make an imitation grenade. Ain't too sure why I'm still here. Guess I haven't paid my penance yet.

It is not verboten to post it... just keeping the liability of the site to a minimum.... as in NONE - if you try this you are all alone...

Mix it in a tumbler, in a hole, way in the back yard, with wood top over it....just in case...

if you use stale urine and mix it in with the rest of the stuff it will not go bang when you mix it. the urine will evaporate out and it is an oxidizer that will give it more kick. this was taken from foxfire 5 if you try this and blow yourself up it isn't my fault.

When our son was in 5th grade he was in an "Advanced" class that required
all the kids to choose a project, research it, then do a presentation on it.
He chose Black Powder.
The recipe was easy enough to find, but we ran into problems when
we went to the drug store to get the saltpeter. They wouldn't sell it to us.
Fortunatley one of the Scouters I worked with had a drug store and
got it for us. But he told me that they aren't "supposed" to sell it or the sulfer,
as it could be made into BP.
We ground all the ingredients SEPERATLY then weighed them out to the correct
proportions. Then we WET them, mixed and sieved it.
I had to jump through some hoops to take my pistol to school for the demo,
but they DID let me do it.
In a side by side test with commercial powder and ours, the commercial had more umph,
but ours did go off and did push the wad out. My guess would be we would just need to
tweek our recipe, but it did work.

This post originally contained the recipe for black powder -- ingredients and amounts and the mixing procedure. After discussion amongst the staff it was decided that info of this sort is, in fact, not going to be permitted here.

We know that this info is "out there" in cyberspace. We know that several commonly-available books that any library can acquire for you contain this info. HOWEVER -- there is a lot of info "out there" that is not permitted here. Porn is "out there" and most definitely not permitted here. Likewise violent videos, profanity-filled comedy acts, and discussions of in-lines. We've decided that info that could lead to a kid or anyone else trying to brew up some black, and blowing some portion of his body off, is more than needs to be posted here. It's one thing to know that the info is "out there", even to tell people it's "out there", and something else again to essentially dump that info in the lap of every reader of this thread and say, "Here ya go!"

The making of black powder is an actual art and a potentially very dangerous one even when proper safety procedures are followed. When the directions for making BP are posted in a place like this, the poster by definition surrenders all responsibility for who might read those directions and the use they might put them to. It has been mentioned elsewhere that with every right, including that of self-expression and that of possessing both weapons and ammunition (hence, black powder), comes responsibility. We feel it's grossly irresponsible to post info on such a literally-volatile subject with no regard for who might use it, what their ability to use it might be, or the consequences of that use.

Edited by Mongrel -- the recipe for black powder manufacture doesn't need to be available here, even in a locked topic.
