We'll I tried to make a spear point today outta a giant nail, think I got it to hot, melted it than whacked it with a hammer. Neadless to say my pants have new holes in them and so does my right finger. Think I'll look for a book on makin spear tip's and arrow heads. But on the lighter side got some tools made and started on a tomahawk. Had a giant burnpile going today and didn't want to waste the coals. I don't think it reaches temp as fast as coal but it is working while I'm learning how to do stuff and burn myself. Ya gotta love it though. ;D

Brokenhawk
I think you will have better luck using flat pieces for flat metal for spear points and the metal bands for old barrels for arrrow heads. Just the way I see things

Yeah was just out playing with it again, tried to make a pair of tongs to hold the metal it gets hot. I found abunch of flat bar about an inch wide should work for tips.

If you know where railroad tracks are walk 'em and grab a few spikes, if you need knife blades old files work great[properly tempered afterward or they'll snap like glass], nails for the most part are a failry soft mild steel but good for practicing with,Ive made nice tiny patch knives out of masonry cut nails. the library is a surprising source of info for blacksmithing read up find the foxfire series of books, that has everything about back to basics. There is also a book by that name"back to basics" have fun,uh sorry, you will  get more burns, but it's worth it!
