So I have had this powder horn for a little bit now and thought it needed a little something. So since I am over 75% Pennsylvania German, I decided a Distelfink was in order. If you don't know, a distelfink is a Fraktur form of a Golden Finch from Europe. Fraktur is the art style of the PA Germans.

This is my first ever attempt at scrimshaw. I need to touch up a little here and there, and use a black dye on it, its just pencil lead in the cuts for now. Hope everyone enjoys it. I am quite proud of it!

Looks Good to Me!
What kind of Bird is that?

Looks great to me!  I like the significance of it, part of your heritage/history.  The fact that you did it yourself makes it that much more a work of art.

Good job!!

Thank you all for the nice comments. It feels good to have done something yourself and get complimented. All of my gear I have handmade myself. It is a Distelfink. See my first post for a detailed explanation. Wish I could fix the couple of slips I made with my knife, but I think it adds character too. Managed to not cut myself, so that was a plus.

Looks like fine work to me and managing not to cut yourself is a definite plus!

chrrs  looks great, I'm still in the polishing stage, haven't decided on pattern yet, like the white finish (just personal)  Not blood letting that is indeed a good job

Otter

Very good work indeed! Not sure if it's at all right to make an object with a sharp knife and NOT draw at least a little blood. A course maybe ahm jest a bit clumsy, just sayin'.
