My new mocs

Okay, so before I get into this, just wanted to give a brief funny history regarding the moccasins I have just constructed. When I was living out west, in the dreaded state of California, I got a wild hair to start trying to do some reenacting, but I never got any time off, so any plans to attend a rendezvous, or do anything really always kind of fell through. I would make plans and cancel them, well, ya'll get the picture. I bought many patterns to make clothing, ordered a full hide from Brettun's Village Leather, and sewed myself a fantabulous leather hunting shirt with fringe, that I have never gotten to wear. I just thought it looked cool, but I have come to the conclusion that it really wouldn't fit into any period.......period. lol! I have done a ton of research since,.. At any rate, I have been carrying this heavy, leather, jacket shirt around for 3-4 years, and when I decided I needed some center seam moccasins, I started thinking about all of the leather that went into the shirt's construction. So I did some sleuthing online, and found a free pattern... here's the website...
www.nativetech.org
So I have deconstructed the hunting shirt, followed the pattern, and have made a great pair of center seam moccs which I can't wait to post a picture of,...now, here is the question.....the only thing left from the hunting shirt is the sleeves, and they were some GREAT sleeves, and they are fringed, and they match the moccs because they are from the same hide...they fit around my legs, but aren't long enough to be considered leggings, I know that folks wore gaiters back then, is there any kind of documentation on leather gaiters....with fringe? So I could (maybe) get away with wearing 2 piece moccs? Because they look COOL!, (and they technically could provide additional protection for busting through underbrush for the lower leg, like a gaiter) As soon as I find my digital camera, I will snap a few pics, and post them for your consideration....I will now open the floor for thoughts, comments, and suggestions while lounging around in my new 2 piece moccs. :)

Sounds like a good use for the shirt.... how about making them apache style high mocc's?  just thinking out loud here....

I wear low top mocs, but have sheep skin 14inch high 'convertable tops' that I slide on my legs ahead of time when cold....Don't see why your leg/sleeves wouldn't be just as good.

Since I posted initially, I have been hunting through every buckskinning site I can find for pics, have done more reading about gaiters than I wanted to, and I think they're gonna be okay too.  thmbsup And if not I think I'm gonna wear em anyways. I have seen many pics of legwraps that stop just at the knee or slightly over it....none of em have fringe though, and that was the part I was worried about. The pattern I used though said I could cut fringe at the heel tab, I am assuming because they would whisk the dust vehind the wearer to smudge the tracks? It seemed like a good idea, haven't had a chance to test that theory yet....I wanted my legwrap/gaiter/leggings to match, and they make a nice pairing this way...still working on some practical aesthetics though, like sewing some antler buttons to the sides so I can button the flaps(former cuffs of the sleeves) to the sides of the moccs, and some kind of drawstring lace, just below the knee to tie them a little tighter. I'll post some pics when I get a chance. I'm going up to the public days at the Bloody Lake Rendezvous as a tourist and shopper today, and may snap a lot of pics while I am there too, I figure it's a good opportunity to look around, get some ideas, and just get OUT even if it is raining, plus maybe I can find enough raw material to keep making stuff without paying shipping for it. :)
