I'm thinking...Cherokee halfbreed heading west to the Rocky's about the time of Lewis and Clark. Need info on what kind of clothing I would most likely wear...and some options. Appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Half breeds wore a variety of clothing as they would either go with the native garb, white garb or a mix of the 2. So its up to you to decide which you want for your personna, but myself I would do the blend as that way theres  signs of both cultures.

You mean as in breechclout and weskit, or dropfronts and warshirt?

heatherhistorian

Please no war shirt...people over use those.  Corouroys, calico shirt, breech clout instead of pants optional..., vest, moccs...

voyageur1688

 I agree with Heather.

Exactly. Cherokee wouldnt, or didnt know what war shirts were untill they became fashinable circa 1950's. At least for eastern cherokee, there were no western cherokee until the removal, some western styles were adopted but not many.
A simple Footshotkee, Long shirt, of linen to about knee length, with a simple band color either caped or not. Capes are seen on some examples but not all. A pair of tailored center seam high thigh leggings, and a pair of lower calf moccasins. Many people wore a turban with traded ostrich plums died black, some times red, but never yellow. Yellow is associated with death and to much could bring bad things on the wearer.

Quite often the creek and cherokee styles of clothing overlapped in the tight areas of the south east. By the late 1700's the cherokee were trading thousands upon thousands of buckskined hides to the whites and for the most part cloth shirts that were either traded for or copied after the whites were worn. Reds and blues, as well as prints of the period were worn. There are some buckskin shirts but are not anything like the western plains type so called war shirt. They were tailored more or less for a closer fit for the wearer.
Here are some sketches of clothing related to the south eastern folks.

Although the dates show from 1830's onward, not much chaned from late 1700's until the civil war and in the case of the Seminole, until about 1928. I hope this helps you Ned.
