A few years ago I was doing a Walnut dying project when I got finished I had 2 Grocery bags of Walnuts left.
I dumped them out behind the house under a maple tree I had to gather up the walnuts from a buddy.
I only have Maple trees at home.
A Squirrel came over to the tree and had a WTF Squirrel moment when he found the Walnuts. hdslp

Corse when my wife found the Tinder fungus soaking in a can of pee in the Garage she had one of those moments too! pnic

I didn't know that walnut would grow in that area. What a find  dntn. Ya prolly don't have ta woory bout a late freeze in the dessert. Should have some nuts. I don't know about pollination if ya only got one. If there's one the should be more around? Good find and good luck with the nut gatherin.

Pecan hulls can be used also.

Pecan's can be used to make a stain? I have a source for those. Any instuctions on their use? Or were you refering to making a medium for poslishing?
Thanks for the info.

I know as a kid my granny used the green shell of the black walnut to get rid of ringworms burned like the dickens but got rid of it quicker than the meds docs give you lol

The green soft outer husk of the pecan can be used as a dye just like walnut husks.  When you peel them off wear gloves cause it will stain your fingers just like walnut husks.  Will not come off with soap and water either.  You can put them in a vat or pot of water and boil them a while till you get it  as dark as you want the solution, can stain clothes as well.

Micanopy thanks for the Braintan website. I have ordered some powder to try. I am still interested in the raw husks but need some stain before the snow melts.

ROFL Thats some good thinkin'! We just got nother 8" on top of whats already on the ground! I'm beginnin' ta think what nuts are left are gonna be little brown puddles when the thaw hits!

Watauga

OK stupid question time.
Can you use Buckeye's to make a dye? strpot
Has anyone tried ?
Or are they a completely useless nut after all? [hmm]
Reason I ask is the buckeye trees are way closer to home.

Stumblin Wolf

shoot that ain't a stupid question, thats a good question! I never thought about it, I have a lot of buckeye trees...

beowulf

that is a good question , anyone ever try it ? I do know that buckeye wood makes some nice knife handles ,specially if you can get some burl or crotch wood !  root wood might be good also !
