We had a late freeze in my area and did not get any nuts this year. I am looking for some husks to make a stain for my Tapper pistol stock. I don' have much to trade at this time. I am new to the hobby and getting started. I am willing to "trade" some cash and pay postage.
Again thanks for all the help in my new obsession.

chuckwagon, I can help you out. How many tons ya want? ROFL

chuckwagonRN

Tons, pounds, or ounces? Not sure how much I could reasonably use now. I am thinking enough to do a pistol stock and a rifle stock. Do they make good tinder or mulch? If the first is good I might take 1/2 lb or for mulch I will look into bulk rates. ROFL
Let me know

Knoe fer a fact that the military likes ta use them fer the grit in NON-SKID on the flight deck and hanger decks of the Aircraft Carriers. A finer grind is used to clean the turbine blades in jet engines...

Dem's gritty? How many uses for the left overs from dem good nuts? Got me tinkin agin. Dangerous accordin to the wife. hdslp This could be interesting.
What can the Walnut husks be used for???? Before we git to far- lookin for sum ta make good stain. All uses will be considered pnic.

There's a difference going on here. Stain is made from the green covering the nut,I suppose some of the shell helps the stain, but its the dried and crushed SHELL that is used in polishing medium and course gritty stuff. My Grandpa made all his stains in the furniture shop, for weeks after you knew when we made walnut stain by our hands(and faces if your brother snuck up on ya!) pnic(by the way,I love this panic guy!)

Thanks Ted!

here i was thinking that is was the nut and hard shell that you made the stain out of...

Fess up  how many others thought the same thing?

I wasn't sure what part made the "husk". Thanks for the clarification. I am not sure how much of the husks are needed to make a small amount of stain. What is the shelf life of the finished stain? How do you store it? Put in a bottle with a tight lid?
Thanks

Poor boy...I can tell you NEVER had a walnut tree!!! If you had there would be NO DOUBT about what imparts the stain!!i

Nope never had one, all we had was apple, maple, pine, and Oak trees.. I can make a mean batch of maple syrup , and pine pitch balls but know nuthing about walnuts... ( I can also tell you how fast a 40 ft pine goes up in flame..  pnic ... but that is another story...)

;D my shops at a 600 acre campground FULL of walnut trees! The mushy rotten brown husks make the best stain; and thats what I have 600 acres of mushy rotten! ROFL

chuckwagonRN

Stumblinwolf- I can help ya get rid of a bag full if you PM me with the details I'll send the necessary costs. I think 600 acres of mushy walnut husks should be enough for all of us to have a lifetime supply of stain. I won't be greedy just need enough to do a pistol at this point.
Thanks
