Posting here for those who don't use Historical Trekking.
We had the pleasure of presenting at the Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Race, Exposition and Symposium (WICKRES)this last week-end.  Five of us,all members of Project Lakewell, crossed Lake Michigan on the 'Badger' car ferry (Ludington to Manitowac) and traveled north to W.I.  We took our 26 foot voyageur canoe, 24 foot bateau, and my 15 foot birch replica.  Most of Saturday we interacted with locals and others who were there for the race and workshops.  We set up our display and related the fur trade era, and how the French and Native American interacted.  Saturday evening, Reed Lewis presented his program about his eight month trip from Montreal thru the Great lakes to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi.  Sunday morning, we paddled the 26 foot canoe from W.I. to the tip of the Door Peninsula.  This passage, about 4 miles, is called 'Port des Morts' or Death Door.  It is normally a rather trecherous passage, but we had very good conditions.  We also had about 20 kayaks, 3 motor boats, a Coast Guard kodiak, and the island car ferry.  The absolute highlight of the paddle was the eagle that watched us from the top of the navigation range light on Plum Island, about half way across.  Great outing!!  Megwetch, Sinnanatha
