Went to the range today in order to see where the primative sight on my Lyman TR puts the bullets.  Also wanted to see how larger charges will do along with where the maxi-balls that I lubed a week ago will print.

First off, RB.  My usual 75-80 gr, charge of Goex placed them a little low (lower right), but moving up to 95 grains grouped them inside 1.5 inches, a great day!  Three shots hit nearly on top of each other, I was smiling!  ;D

Using 338 gr. Buffalo Ball-ets gave nearly the same result, and I was very pleased with them, although I didn't save that target.

Then came the maxi-balls; every charge starting at 75 and going up to 95 gave medicore results, hitting nearly 6 inches low, with barely 4 inch R/L groups.  I would not use these for anything but hunting hogs at 50 yards or less, and cetainly not for target shooting.  I am thinking that my TR's 1:48 twist is not suited for heavy bullets, above 400 grains or so, which isn't a problem given the performance I got out of RB as well as ball-ets today.  Even the shorter maxi-hunter didn't stay within 4 inches.

Next, a picture of my home made MM shirt!

Yes, especially when my rifle will put 5 shots in that small space, I think I can hit the vitals on a critter.

Anyone know about how much energy a round ball has with a 90 grain charge of Goex?

Lee REAL bullets and maxi-balls shoot well using 70 grains or less.

Another trip to the range;

60 grains pushing 242 gr. Lee bullets.

Sometimes lead conicals shoot better with a thin card (milk carton) wad over the powder and cream of wheat under the bullet.

Thanks!  Those were the first three shots of the day so I just had to take the target down for future reference and encouragement.   All together I had 6 bullseyes for the day, I was sunburned and smiling!

Just got back from the range today and tried some 450 grain conicals.  My rifle seems to really like 70 grains and a fiber wad when shooting conicals of any weight.  These were hitting 2 inches high which would be expected on a target less than 50 yards away, but all holes on the horizontal were touching.  My rifle has really settled in since I bought it new, so if you have a factory new one that isn't giving you the best groups, hang in there and keep shooting it.  And just to say it again, I have the utmost confidence in PRB performance for both targets and hunting and wouldn't hestitate to use them, I am just mucking around finding out what else will shoot well and with what powder charge; and having fun doing it! ;D

Looks like a very encouraging session. dntn

My Pedersoli was like that...took it a while, but she shore shoots purty now!!

I guess it takes a few shots to smooth off the sharp edges left on the rifling or something, and I was kinda wondering if I had gotten a lemon after the first few times at the range getting 6 inch groups and all, but now I know she's a good shooter.

William,
Any chance of seeing a picture of those primitive sights?
